Musicians Institute offers three types of scholarships designed to provide tuition assistance to students during their enrollment at MI. The information below describes each scholarship, how to apply, and the deadline for submission. Refer to each scholarship application for specific details; for all additional questions about scholarships, please contact the Admissions Department.
General Information for All MI Scholarships
Scholarship Amounts and Method of Award
- Scholarships are awarded in the form of tuition credit only.
- The total award amount will be determined after a review of your application.
- The total award amount is divided by the number of quarters in your program and credited equally toward each quarter's tuition (except MI Hardship Scholarship; which is a one-time award).
Application and Notification
- MI Scholarships are available only to newly-enrolling students. Before you may submit a scholarship application, you must have a Letter of Acceptance from MI’s Admission Department.
- Scholarship applications are available from the Financial Aid or Admissions Department or by download from this site.
- Completed applications submitted by the appropriate deadline will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the results within two weeks after the deadline.
Other Information
- All scholarships are non-transferable and may not be applied to any person, program, or start date other than those for which they were originally awarded.
- Scholarship recipients who fail to meet minimum academic requirements during their enrollment will forfeit any remaining award balance (see scholarship applications for specific requirements).
Development Scholarship
Development Scholarships are provided to encourage the educational growth of new students enrolled in a degree or certificate program who have verifiable financial need (this scholarship is limited to US citizens and permanent residents). A minimum of twenty Development Scholarships are awarded each year.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Development Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:
- A 250-word essay explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship and describing the extent of your financial need.
- A copy of your official high school or college transcript.
- Verifiable financial need (tax return or other means of income verification).

Musicianship Scholarship
Musicianship Scholarships are available to new instrument and voice students (both US and non-US citizens) enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate in Performance Programs who demonstrate outstanding musicianship. A total of ten Musicianship Scholarships (two per instrument) are awarded for each new program start. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in performance (instrument and voice) programs only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases ( Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA or Bachelor degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Musicianship Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:
- An essay explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship.
- A video recording displaying your performing skills. Video requirements vary by program; see application for details.

Opportunity Scholarship
Opportunity Scholarships are available to middle-income instrument or voice students enrolling in Degree or Certificate programs who have verifiable financial need.
Requirements
To be considered for an Opportunity Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
- United States citizen or permanent resident
- Non-dependent student born before January 1, 1986 (if applying for the October 2009 or April 2010 start)
- Earned at least $24,000.00 in the 2008 tax year (if applying for the October 2009 or April 2010 start) 4. Minimum High School GPA of 2.5
Application Deadlines
Applications are accepted up to the first day of classes for each new program start. Opportunity Scholarships are awarded to qualified applicants on a first-come, first-served basis up to the maximum number of available awards.

Hardship Scholarship
The MI Hardship Scholarship is awarded to qualified applicants who are currently enrolled in MI Certificate, AA Degree, or BM Degree programs and is based on verifiable financial need, current academic standing, and essay submission.
Eligibility
To be considered for the MI Hardship Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
- Be currently enrolled in any MI Certificate, AA Degree, or BM Degree program.
- Complete an MI Hardship Scholarship application (see application download instructions below). Eligibility is determined by a combination of demonstrated financial need, academic standing (minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75) and the quality and content of the scholarship essay (described below).
- Submit a 250 word essay explaining why you should be considered for the MI Hardship Scholarship. Include your goals, financial situation (including the amount of tuition credit requested), and any other factors you consider relevant.
Award
- Tuition credit is applied to the current quarter based on student need and available funds on a first-come, first-served basis as a one-time award.
Application deadline
Applications are accepted at any time during a student’s enrollment. There is no deadline for application.

Independent Artist Scholarship
Independent Artist Scholarships are available to applicants (both US and non-US citizens) enrolling in the Artist Certificate Program who demonstrate outstanding talent.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Independent Artist Scholarship, you must submit a completed application including:
- An audio recording containing the songs that you submitted with your original application to the program plus at least two and up to five more (formats accepted: Audio CD, AIFF, WAV, mp3, AAC).
- A detailed credit list for all songs submitted including who performed on each instrument, who engineered, and who produced.
- If you are the author of any lyrics performed or submitted with this application, include a lyric sheet for each song.
- A 1-2 page essay describing your short and long-term career objectives. Include specific information about how you plan to meet your objectives.
In addition to the requirements above, submit ONLY ONE of the following three items:
- A video recording containing a minimum of 2 original songs in a solo performance or in a band/ensemble setting (formats accepted: DVD, quicktime /.mov, mpeg, VHS).
- Complete multi-track audio files of two original recordings (these may be the same songs submitted above) Formats accepted: Apple Logic, Pro Tools, Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, bounced individual audio files).
- A video recording of less than 15 minutes documenting your writing/creative process (formats accepted: DVD, quicktime /.mov, mpeg, VHS).

The Carvin Guitar Scholarship, sponsored by Carvin Corporation, is awarded each Fall and Spring to a new applicant to the Associate of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program (US or non-US citizen) who demonstrates outstanding musicianship and stylistic diversity. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases ( Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for a Carvin Guitar Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:
- Complete a Carvin Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) stylistically diverse songs on your instrument. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece in any style(s) of music. You may use electric and/or acoustic guitars.
Award
- Tuition credit of $1,000.00 per quarter for the first two quarters of the program (as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress)
- A new Carvin guitar

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.

To be considered for an ESP Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete an ESP Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) diverse songs (in any style within the Rock genre) on your instrument. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece. You may use electric and/or acoustic guitars.
Award
- Tuition credit of $2,000.00 ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first two quarters of the program as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress)
- A new ESP guitar

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Bass performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for an ESP Bass Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete an ESP Bass Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) stylistically diverse songs on your instrument. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece in various styles. You may use electric and/or acoustic bass.
Award
- Tuition credit of $2,000.00 ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first two quarters of the program as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress)
- A new ESP bass

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non-performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility
To be considered for the Schecter Synyster Gates Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete the Schecter Synyster Gates Guitar Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) diverse songs on your guitar within the Heavy Rock or Metal genre. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece.

To be considered for an Evans Drum Scholarship, you must take the following steps:

To be considered for a David Geffen Foundation Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

- Complete a LaFamos Scholarship application (see application download instructions below). Eligibility is determined by a combination of demonstrated financial need, academic standing (minimum GPA of 3.0) and the quality and content of the scholarship essay (described below).
- Submit a 250-word essay explaining why you should be considered for the LaFamos Scholarship. Include your goals, financial situation (including the amount of tuition credit requested), and any other factors you consider relevant.
Award
Tuition credit (up to a maximum of $500) based on student need and available funds.
