DEVELOP PERFORMANCE AND PRODUCTION SKILLS
As a performer, you develop your keyboard skills and explore a range of contemporary styles including funk, R&B, blues, jazz, country, rock, fusion, Afro-Cuban and Brazilian under the direction of some of LA’s best working professionals.
At the same time, you learn how to use the electronic keyboard’s vast capabilities for sampling, drum programming, production, digital recording and arranging, including certified Apple Logic training.
DEGREES OFFERED
BACHELOR OF MUSIC IN PERFORMANCE
This unique degree program combines contemporary music performance training with the rigorous study of traditional disciplines including sight-reading, music history, arranging, conducting, recording and more. The comprehensive program instructs students to demonstrate stylistic depth, creative maturity and professional competence in preparation for careers in today’s music industry.
ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Performance Track
The intensive A.A. curriculum prepares musicians to perform in any professional situation, along with learning professional development skills such as basic computer use, EPK creation, resume and bio writing, and social media as a tool for business and networking.
The Associate of Arts Degree is intended to equip students with the knowledge and training needed to become professional performers in today’s music industry.
Choosing the Performance Track allows students to receive a heavier emphasis on live
performance skills, as well as basic training in using Reason software.
CERTIFICATE IN MUSIC PERFORMANCE
Performance Track
Students can earn a Certificate in MI’s Performance Studies program for Keyboard Technology. With an innovative 360-degree approach to music education, MI Certificates are centered on Harmony, Theory and Ear Training, with core subjects in Reading, Technique and Performance.
This Certificate program provides students with a broad foundation of knowledge and practical experience, encouraging the rapid development of skills in preparation for a range of professional music performance situations.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?
- Core classes include: Technique, Reading, Digital Music, Keyboard Synthesis, Virtual Instruments, Video Scoring and more
- Elective offerings help students develop stage-ready live performing skills in the following contemporary styles: pop, hip-hop, blues, jazz, country, rock, Afro-Cuban, Brazilian, reggae, funk and R&B
- Authorized Apple Logic training is available

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS
Record A. and B. along with a clearly audible metronome, “click track,” or drum machine.
A. Play two scales and two arpeggios of your choice in three octaves using both hands, with accurate execution and consistent time. *
B. Play 60 seconds of a rhythm groove in any style and tempo.
C. Submit two performances that best represent your style and abilities. The recording may be solo or may include other musicians or play-along tracks. You may submit previously recorded material that features your playing; Original material or covers.
D. Speaking Voice: Record your own speaking voice with a short narrative explaining why you wish to attend Musicians Institute.
* If you have not received formal keyboard training, please play an example of what you would play for personal enjoyment when sitting at a piano. No sequencing or programming, please.
