Happy Pride Month to all who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies! In light of various legislation codifying hatred for people who are outside the hetero- and cisnormative, it has never been more important to celebrate the diverse identities that make up our community.
We’d like to remind our community that all identities and people are welcome here at Musicians Institute. Music is, and should always be, an inclusive medium for everyone to express themselves freely.
History of Pride in Los Angeles
While Pride is currently recognized as a celebration of love and being true to oneself, it is important to remember that the first Pride was a protest known as the Stonewall Riots, started by Marsha P. Johnson, a black trans woman, and others who were not able to publicly be themselves or be with the people they love. The first Pride in Los Angeles, which was also the first permitted Pride Parade in the world, started on June 28, 1970 right in front of where Musicians Institute stands today at the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and McCadden Place in commemoration of the Stonewall Riots the year prior.
