We won’t beat around the bush: music school is competitive. Most of the top schools your child will choose to pursue will require some type of audition. During the audition, your child will be asked to show off their talents, answer a few questions, and leave a favorable impression on the auditioning board.

As a parent, you’ll want to do everything you can to support them through this challenging and rewarding process.

Here are a few ways you can do that:

Remain calm

Auditions are exciting and are the first step your child will take in their music career. During their audition, it’s easy to feel nervous and anxious. They’re your child, and you only want what’s best for them!

However, keep in mind your emotions directly impact theirs. Children feed off your energy. If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to take a step back, go on a walk, or practice breathing exercises. Whatever you have to do to keep your anxiety under control, do it for your child’s success!

Always have a positive mindset

When it comes to music, rejection is part of the process. If your child is passionate about furthering their career in the music industry, they’ll need to know how to handle rejection with confidence and take on new auditions without worry.

No matter how the auditions go, it’s important to remain optimistic and encourage them to never give up on their hopes and dreams. Positivity will set the premise for their career in the music industry. It will help them take rejection with confidence and provide the emotional support they need to take on their next audition.

Let the focus be on them

Remember, it’s their audition! As a parent, you want to show your support for your child and be there for them. However, don’t allow your support to be overbearing.

Instead, check in with your child and be aware of their emotions. Ask them questions, help them where you can, but maintain a healthy distance. If you’re overbearing or too pushy, it could cause more harm than good.

Have a mock audition

If this is your child’s first audition, it may be nerve-racking. They probably don’t know what to expect and may be nervous. One way to combat this is by running a mock audition.

During the mock audition, you can provide feedback on their performance, give them words of encouragement, and help them fine-tune the piece they plan on playing. This will help them improve their audition-taking etiquette, tackle the nervous jitters, and give them the confidence they need to succeed.

Celebrate the experience

Auditioning isn’t always an easy process for the parent or the child. You’ll feel a lot of different emotions throughout the experience. Once the audition is done, you both need to sit back, relax, and wait for the results! Remember that you’ve done all that you can to help them get to this point in their life, and that’s something that should always be celebrated.

If it’s not meant to be, it’s not meant to be! There will always be more opportunities in the future. Don’t forget to congratulate yourself for helping push them through the experience. Without you, none of this would be possible.
