Through The Lens is our weekly series where we highlight current students and faculty, capture them on campus and ask them about their inspirations, advice and beyond.

Which famous musicians do you admire? Why?

Some musicians I admire and are inspired by Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Loretta Lynn, and Reba McEntire for paving the way for women in country music and being amazing musicians. George Strait for the longevity of his career and how true to his roots he’s stayed. Eric Church and Chris Stapleton for the type of country music they make and their amazing musicianship! Carrie Underwood for her amazing vocal ability and how true to herself she has stayed. And I love Miranda Lambert for her songwriting, the musicality of her voice, and they type of country music she makes.

What are your fondest musical memories? In your house/ growing up In your neighborhood?

I have so many fond musical memories because I’ve been singing and saying I wanted to be a singer since I could talk. My mom bought me a karaoke machine when I was like 5 and I remember learning Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and “Fancy” by Reba McEntire. I also used to act out songs like the first song from Beauty and the Beast or “I Just Can’t Wait To Be King” from Lion King, and make everyone watch. And I’d make friends at school or in the neighborhood do it with me. I directed and starred in all performances, of course! Lol

How often and for how long do you practice?

I am always working on something for my career. Whether it being practicing singing or listening to the songs I need to perform in the car, shower, while getting ready, at school on breaks, after class, etc. Or thinking of song lyrics literally 24/7 (I have a hard time sleeping a lot of time because lyrics just pop into my head and won’t leave!!!! It drives my husband crazy sometimes!). Or practicing guitar, or keyboard, or figuring out gigs, or music business stuff. Music and my career are never far from my mind. It’s exhausting, but I want to be the best I can be and hard work is the way to do that.

What brought you to MI?

What brought me to MI was wanting to be a better musician. I’ve been performing my whole life, but I was sick of just being a “singer”. I wanted to be a musician. I wanted to know harmony and theory, and songwriting, and recording, and then make my performing and voice better. You can never stop learning, especially in this industry. You’re never the best you can be. And getting that here at MI has been invaluable.

What are some of your Goals while attending MI?

My goals while attending MI are working on my musicianship, recording a demo, making connections and relationships with my peers and teachers, and overall just becoming prepared for getting out in the real world of the music industry. And just working towards be the best I can be!
