
RACHEL JIYOUNG YOON

Rachel started playing the piano at the age of 2, taught by her mother, a concert pianist and professor. She began composing at the age of 7 under the tutelage of her father, a classical composer and professor. She entered Seoul National University as the top-ranked student and earned a BA and MA in Composition. Rachel then received a Ph.D. in Composition from UCLA.
ACADEMIC LEADERSHIP & PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT
As Chief Academic Officer, Rachel oversees Musicians Institute’s bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in contemporary music performance, production, and songwriting. She has designed and developed innovative curricula including MI’s Bachelor of Music in Composition (Scoring for Visual Media) degree program and is launching the new Master of Music in Songwriting and Production program in 2027. Rachel leads institutional accreditation efforts, academic policy development, faculty coordination, and student placement initiatives that bridge classical training with contemporary music industry needs.
INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
Rachel has established Musicians Institute’s global presence through strategic partnerships across Asia, Europe, and Latin America. She develops and manages international exchange programs, including innovative extended pathways where students complete two years at their home institution and transfer to MI to earn both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in three years. Rachel coordinates international recruitment, faculty exchanges, master classes abroad, and collaborative programs with conservatories and universities worldwide, significantly expanding MI’s reach in the global music education community.
SPECIALTIES
Rachel is an accomplished administrator, educator, program developer, composer, arranger, and performer. Her expertise spans curriculum design, international education partnerships, accreditation compliance, and contemporary music pedagogy. As a musician, Rachel’s compositional and arranging style draws from minimalism, impressionistic harmonies, ethnomusicology, and commercial music, and she continues to perform as a keyboardist at premier venues throughout Los Angeles.
