Musicians Institute Alum Builds a Career Performing With Selena Gomez, Halsey, and Post Malone

Bonnie McIntosh’s career reflects what happens when strong musical foundations meet real-world opportunity. A classically trained pianist turned global touring keyboardist, she has performed with major artists including Selena Gomez, Halsey, Kehlani, and Post Malone.

Her journey did not start on stadium stages. It started with curiosity, persistence, and a decision to expand what she thought was possible for a keyboard player.

After studying classical piano at California State University, Los Angeles, Bonnie immersed herself in the Los Angeles music scene before enrolling at Musicians Institute, a move that helped shift her trajectory from student to working professional.

“I went to MI, and what I got out of that school was auditioning,” she shared. “I did audition after audition until I started landing gigs.”

That focus on real-world application became a turning point in her development as a musician.

Expanding the Role of the Keyboard Player

At Musicians Institute, Bonnie was exposed to more than technique. She was trained to think like a working musician in modern production and performance environments.

“I got humbled so quick by some of these players that were like sound designers and engineers that could also play keys and you know learning Logic, learning Ableton, learning how to program on a Phantom G8, learning how to work with workstations, learning how to program an analog synthesizer. That was a world I did not know at all and I was not necessarily prepared for that. And in hindsight was kind of a good thing because I got hit with this reality check…” she said.

That broader understanding became a defining advantage. Instead of limiting herself to traditional piano roles, she developed the flexibility required for contemporary touring and pop performance.

Soon after, she landed her first major touring opportunity with Selena Gomez, launching her into a career performing on some of the world’s biggest stages.

Building a Career Through Adaptability

Today, Bonnie is recognized for her ability to perform at a high level across genres, environments, and production styles. Her work spans international tours, televised performances, and high-pressure live shows. She emphasizes continuous growth as a key part of sustaining a music career.

“It’s not enough to just be good at your instrument,” she said. “As long as you want to improve all the time, that’s the most important thing in this business.”

That mindset has allowed her to remain in demand in an industry that values adaptability as much as technical skill.

Why Keyboard Skills Matter for Modern Musicians

Bonnie’s career highlights a larger truth in today’s music industry. Keyboard ability is not just a performance skill. It is a production and communication tool.

Her keyboard training allows her to:

  • Learn and execute parts quickly in live settings
  • Communicate musical ideas clearly with artists and MDs
  • Adapt across pop, R&B, and live touring environments
  • Contribute creatively beyond basic programming

In modern music production and performance, that versatility is a major competitive advantage.

The MI Advantage

Bonnie’s path reflects the Musicians Institute approach to preparing musicians for real careers. The focus on audition preparation, performance training, and applied music production helps students transition directly into professional environments.

For Bonnie, that experience became the bridge between education and touring work, giving her both the technical and professional readiness required for the industry. Now an established touring keyboardist, Bonnie continues to perform globally while building a career rooted in consistency, adaptability, and musicianship.
