MIONLINE SHORT COURSE

Groove Rhythm and Style for Bass

i COURSE OVERVIEW

Starting Date
April 20, 2026
Tuition
$575
Level
Advanced
Duration
4 weeks
This course explores the rhythmic, harmonic, and stylistic foundations of groove-based bass playing. Students will develop the ability to shape time, articulation, and feel while applying these concepts across a range of genres and subdivisions. The course begins with an exploration of articulation and rhythmic feel, focusing on long-tone vs. short-tone approaches and the expressive character they bring to eighth-note basslines. Students then apply these concepts to shuffle and 12/8 grooves, strengthening control and stylistic accuracy. Building on this foundation, the class moves into the power and versatility of the 16th-note subdivision. Through straight, syncopated, and swung patterns, students expand their rhythmic vocabulary while comparing tone, attack, and articulation across fingerstyle and slap techniques. The role of syncopation, rhythmic tension, and the 16th-note shuffle is emphasized to prepare students for funk, R&B, and fusion styles. The course then turns to the art of walking bass and Latin bass traditions. Students will craft basslines that balance groove with harmonic clarity in both 2-feel and 4-feel styles, learning to outline harmony through triads, 7th chords, and voice leading. Latin grooves—including bossa nova, samba, and mambo—will be explored to highlight rhythmic subdivision, syncopation, and stylistic nuance. Finally, the course examines odd meters, including 5/4, 6/4, 6/8, 7/4, and 7/8. Students will learn strategies to internalize and perform these meters confidently, connecting them to both folk traditions and modern popular music.

i LESSON GUIDE

In Week 1, students will explore the expressive power of articulation and rhythmic feel in bass playing. We will begin by introducing the concepts of long-tone and short-tone articulation, focusing on how note length and separation can shape the character of a groove. Through performance exercises, students will apply both articulation styles to a variety of eighth-note basslines, developing control and stylistic awareness. The unit will then transition into an introduction to the eighth-note shuffle (swing) feel and the 12/8 subdivision. Students will learn the counting system and rhythmic placement that create the unique lilt of shuffle and swing-based grooves. Through explanation, demonstration, and guided practice, students will apply these concepts to standard basslines, strengthening their ability to lock into rhythmic subdivisions while maintaining steady time and feel.

  • Differentiate between long-tone and short-tone articulation in performance.
  • Perform eighth-note basslines using both articulation approaches.
  • Apply and execute the shuffle/swing subdivision and its counting system.
  • Perform basslines in a shuffle or 12/8 feel with accuracy and stylistic confidence.
