The information below describes each scholarship, how to apply, and the deadline for submission. General Information for all MI scholarships:
Scholarship Amounts and Method of Award
- Scholarships are awarded in the form of tuition credit only.
- The total award amount will be determined after a review of your application.
- The total award amount is divided by the number of quarters in your program and credited equally toward each quarter's tuition (except MI Hardship Scholarship; which is a one-time award).
Application and Notification
- MI Scholarships are available only to students enrolling in a new program. Before you may submit a scholarship application, you must have a Letter of Acceptance from MI's Admission Department.
- Scholarship applications are available from the Financial Aid Office or Admissions Department or by download from this site.
- Completed applications submitted by the appropriate deadline will be reviewed and applicants will be notified of the results within two weeks after the deadline.
Other Information
- All scholarships are non-transferable and may not be applied to any person, program, or start date other than those for which they were originally awarded.
- Scholarship recipients who fail to meet minimum academic requirements during their enrollment will forfeit any remaining award balance (see scholarship applications for specific requirements).

Guitar Scholarships
ESP Guitar Scholarship:
The ESP Guitar Scholarship, sponsored by the ESP Guitar Company, is awarded each Fall and Spring to a student enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program who demonstrates outstanding musicianship in the Rock genre. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to a non-performance program emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility:
- Enroll in the Associates of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program only
- U.S. or non- U.S. citizen.
- Demonstrate outstanding musicianship in the Rock genre.
How to Apply: to be considered for a scholarship, submit the following

- A video recording (DVD) format only) of you performing three (3) diverse songs (in any style within the Rock genre) on your instrument. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece. You may use electric and/or acoustic guitars.
Award:
Tuition credit of $2,000.00 ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first two quarters of the program as long as the recipient maintains satisfactory progress). A new ESP guitar.

The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to a non-performance program emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility:
To be considered for the Schecter Synyster Gates Guitar Scholarship, you must take the following steps:

The Daisy Rock Bangles/Vicki Peterson Guitar Scholarship, sponsored by The Daisy Rock Girl Guitar Company to support the educational growth of a newly enrolling female student; will be awarded in Fall 2013 to a female student enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program (US or non-US citizen) who demonstrates outstanding musicianship, band performance skills and originality in the Rock/Pop genre.
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to "non-performance program" emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.

Mitch Faber Memorial Blues Guitar Scholarship:
The Mitch Faber Memorial Blues Guitar Scholarship was created to honor the memory, talent and artistic career of GIT alumnus (class of 1981) Mitch Faber; and is provided to encourage and support the educational growth of a newly enrolling Guitar Program (GIT) student.
The scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2013 to a new student (US or non-US citizens) enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Guitar) program who demonstrates overall outstanding musicianship, and the potential for developing their own individual sound or unique voice on the instrument in the Blues style.
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the AA Guitar performance program only, and may not be transferred to “non- performance program” emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility and Conditions:
Newly-enrolled AA (Guitar) students only. US citizen and non-US citizen. Awardee must maintain enrollment at 12 units (fulltime status) during the full length of award period. To be considered for the GHS Strings Bass Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete a GHS Strings Bass Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) songs on your instrument that highlight your bass tone/sound and musicianship. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo piece in various styles. You may use electric and/or acoustic bass.
Award:
$1,000.00 tuition credit ($1,000.00 per quarter for the first quarter of the program. Awardee must maintain enrollment at 12 units (fulltime status) during the full length of award period. The MI 35th Anniversary Vocal Scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2013 to a student (US or non-US citizens) enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Vocal) Program who demonstrates outstanding vocal skills in any genre. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Vocal Performance Program only, and may not be transferred to "non-performance program" emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility:
To be considered for the MI 35th Anniversary Vocal Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete an MI 35th Anniversary Vocal Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) songs in any style. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) solo (a capella) performance.

Rennesha Patterson Vocal Musicianship Scholarship:
The Rennesha Patterson Vocal Musicianship Scholarship is available to new students enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate Vocal Performance Programs. A total of two scholarships are awarded for each Fall and Spring starting quarter. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in vocal performance programs only, and may not be transferred to a non-performance program emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA or Bachelor degree.
Eligibility:
- New vocal student enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate Programs.
To apply for this scholarship, submit the following:
- A completed application (see download instructions below)
- An essay explaining why you should be considered for the scholarship.
- VHS or DVD video which must contain at a minimum: two (2) songs in two (2) different styles in an ensemble setting and one (1) a cappella piece.
Award:
$1,000.00 tuition credit for each quarter of the program as long as the student maintains satisfactory academic progress and remains enrolled full time.

W. Crane Guy Memorial Vocal Scholarship:
The W. Crane Guy Memorial Vocal Scholarship was created to honor the memory, multiple talents and artistic career of MI alumnus W. Crane Guy (class of 2010); and is provided to encourage and support the educational growth of a newly enrolling Vocal Program student.
The scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2013 to a new student (US or non-US citizens) enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Vocal) program who demonstrates overall outstanding musicianship, and the potential for developing their own unique voice in any style. Preference will be given to veterans, but this is not required for eligibility.
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the AA Vocal performance program only, and may not be transferred to a non- performance program emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.
Eligibility:
Newly-enrolled AA (Vocal) students only. US citizen and non-US citizen. Awardee must maintain enrollment at 12 units (fulltime status) during the full length of award period. The Evans Drum Scholarship, sponsored by Evans Drumheads, is awarded each Fall and Spring to students enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Drums) program who demonstrate overall outstanding musicianship and stylistic versatility. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the Drum performance program only, and may not be transferred to a non-performance program emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA degree.

To be considered for an Evans Drum Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Complete an Evans Drum Scholarship application (see application download instructions below).
- Submit a video recording (DVD format only) of you performing three (3) stylistically diverse songs on the drum set. It is recommended that this include two (2) live ensemble (band or duo) performances, and one (1) drum solo performance.
Award:
$1,000.00 tuition credit applied to the first quarter of the program.

MI 35th Anniversary Drum Scholarship:
The MI 35th Anniversary Drum Scholarship, is sponsored by MI alumni, and is awarded to students (US or non-US citizens) enrolling in the Associate of Arts in Performance (Drums) Program who demonstrate overall outstanding musicianship and stylistic versatility. Hard Rock Cafe/Hollywood High Scholarship:
The Hard Rock Cafe/Hollywood High Scholarship, generously sponsored by The Hard Rock Cafe Hollywood, will be awarded to a Hollywood High School senior graduating in 2013 who demonstrates excellence in musicianship and performance skills (in any genre) and will be enrolling in any Associate of Arts Performance program or Bachelors Performance program at Musicians Institute in Fall 2013.
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the AA or Bachelor Degree performance program only (vocal, guitar, bass, drums, keyboard), and may not be transferred to "non-performance program" emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within any degree.
Eligibility and Conditions:
Newly enrolled AA or Bachelors performance program students only. Must be a Hollywood High School senior, graduating in 2013. Open to US citizen and non-US citizens. MI enrollment application fee waiver of $100 will be applied to all scholarship applicants.

Stanley Clarke Scholarship:
Attention! Talented (current) MI students are invited to apply and submit their DVDs for the prestigious Stanley Clarke Scholarship at Musicians Institute. Stanley is looking for the best, brightest and most talented musicians at MI! This scholarship will be awarded on the basis of musical talent, performing ability, stage presence, musicianship and charisma in any style or genre of music.
Eligibility:
- Must be a currently enrolled (domestic and international) Musicians Institute student in AA performance (guitar, bass, drums, vocal, keyboard) or Bachelor’s performance programs in good academic standing as of Summer quarter 2013.
How to Apply: to be considered for a scholarship, submit the following:
- Submit a DVD recording of two (2) songs (one with their own band or tracks, and one unaccompanied solo or a cappella-piece) in any style that highlight your talents and performance abilities.
- Submit a completed PDF application form.
Awards:
Grand Prize
The top TWO grand prize winners will each receive a scholarship prize package of $4,500 cash and a $4,500 tuition discount from MI which is applicable to any MI program in which the student is currently enrolled, or can be applied to any MI program that the student chooses to enroll in during 2013-2014. Total award = $9,000 per grand prize winner in cash and tuition discount with two winners. Disbursements will vary by length of program, and are awarded in two consecutive quarterly increments.
Runners-up
Three Runners-up (3rd, 4th, and 5th prize) will each receive a scholarship prize package of $1,000 cash and a $1,000 tuition discount from MI which is applicable to any MI program in which the student is currently enrolled, or can be applied to any MI program that the student chooses to enroll in during 2013.
Total award = $2,000 per winner in cash and tuition discount with three winners. Disbursements will be made on a “one-time” quarterly increment.

The TOP FIVE Finalists will be notified by 5pm on July 26, 2013. The top five finalists will play in the Final Performance Event at the Musicians Institute Concert Hall on the evening of August 8, 2013.
Scholarship Winners will be chosen at the August 8th, 2013 Final Performance Event by Stanley Clarke and panel of music industry celebrity judges. Each performer will perform LIVE two (2) songs (one song with their own band or pre-recorded tracks, and one solo or a cappella-piece) at the Finals Performance Event.

Film Scholarships
MI 35th Anniversary Film Program Scholarship:
The MI 35th Anniversary Film Program Scholarship will be awarded in Fall 2013 to a student (US or non-US citizen) newly enrolling in the Musicians Institute Film Program who clearly articulates their career goals within the film and/or television industry and demonstrates verifiable financial need.
The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in the MI Film Program only, and may not be transferred to other programs or emphases within an AA degree.
Eligibility:
To be considered for an MI 35th Anniversary Film Program Scholarship, you must take the following steps:
- Newly enrolled Film Program students only.
- US citizen and non-US citizen.
- Submit a 250-word essay explaining why you should be considered for the MI 35th Anniversary Film Program Scholarship. Include your goals; describe the extent of your financial need and any other factors you consider relevant.
- Provide the completed application form including: Verifiable financial need (submit 2011 tax return or other means of income verification).
Award:
$1,500.00 tuition credit. Awardee must maintain enrollment at 12 units (fulltime status) during the full length of award period. Failure to maintain enrollment and satisfactory academic progress in the MI Film Program for the full duration of the scholarship may result in withdrawal of the award.

Development Scholarship:
Development Scholarships are provided to encourage the educational growth of new students enrolled in a degree or certificate program. A minimum of twenty Development Scholarships are awarded each year.
Eligibility:
- New student enrolled in degree or certificate program.
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
- Must have verifiable financial need.

Musicianship Scholarships are available to new instrumental students enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate in Performance Programs. A total of eight Musicianship Scholarships (two per instrument) are awarded for each new program start. The scholarship is applicable for students enrolled in instrumental performance programs only, and may not be transferred to a non-performance program emphases (Audio Engineering, Music Business, Independent Artist, Guitar Craft, or Film) within an AA or Bachelor degree.
Eligibility:
- New instrumental student in performance program only enrolling in the Bachelor of Music, Associate of Arts, or Certificate in Performance Program.
- U.S. and non-U.S. citizen.
- Demonstrate outstanding musicianship.

The MI Hardship Scholarship is awarded to qualified applicants who are currently enrolled in MI Certificate, AA Degree, or BM Degree programs and is based on verifiable financial need, current academic standing, and essay submission.
Eligibility:
- Enroll currently in any MI Certificate, AA Degree, or BM Degree program.
- Must have verifiable financial need.
- Must have minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75.

Award:
Tuition credit is applied to the current quarter based on the student need and available funds on a first-come, first-served basis, as a one-time award.

Independent Artist Scholarships:
Independent Artist Scholarships are available to applicants enrolling in the Artist Certificate Program who demonstrate outstanding talent.
Eligibility:
- Enroll in Artist Certificate Program.
- U.S. or non-U.S. citizen.
- Demonstrate outstanding talent.
How to Apply: To be considered for an Independent Artist Scholarship, submit the following
- A completed application (see download instructions below). An audio recording containing the songs that you submitted with your original application to the program plus at least two and up to five more (formats accepted: Audio CD, AIFF, WAV, mp3, AAC).
- A detailed credit list for all songs submitted including who performed on each instrument, who engineered, and who produced.
- If you are the author of any lyrics performed or submitted with this application, include a lyric sheet for each song.
- A 1-2 page essay describing your short and long-term career objectives. Include specific information about how you plan to meet your objectives.
- In addition to the requirements above, submit ONLY ONE of the following three items: A video recording containing a minimum of 2 original songs in a solo performance or in a band/ensemble setting (formats accepted: DVD, quicktime /.mov, mpeg, VHS).
- Complete multi-track audio files of two original recordings (these may be the same songs submitted above) Formats accepted: Apple Logic, Pro Tools, Steinberg Cubase, Ableton Live, bounced individual audio files).
- A video recording of less than 15 minutes documenting your writing/creative process (formats accepted: DVD, quicktime /.mov, mpeg, VHS).
Award:
The total scholarship amount will be divided by the total number of quarters in the particular program and credited toward each quarter's tuition in equal amounts, for as long as the student maintains a 3.5 GPA.
