Through The Lens is our weekly series where we highlight current students and faculty, capture them on campus and ask them about their inspirations, advice and beyond.

Which tapes and records influenced you the most in your life?

Records that have influenced me most in my life, I would say are song like Celine Dion’s “It’s All Coming Back To Me” or “Lady Marmalade” then songs from James Brown and, undoubtedly, some Missy Elliott.

What the most important lesson you’ve learned at MI so far? What has surprised you the most about MI?

At MI, the most important thing I have learned is the importance and value of staying in contact with people you meet at the school and following through. What surprised me the most about the school was how many talented people attended.

If there is one piece of advice that you could give to other [area of study] students, what would it be?
One piece of advice I would give to new students is to make strong relationships with the people you meet and jive with at MI both teachers and students, because they are your tribe. They are your family and they are your soulmates in musical creation. Also, take as much advantage of the schools events, labs, and equipment as possible while attending.
What is your favorite music memory?

My favorite memory in the audio engineering program has to be recording a full live band in studio C in class with Mark Nonisia; so much fun multi-tasking, setting up engineering mixing and adjusting levels/affects all at the same time, and of course running the API 1608 analog console; amazing.

Where do you find  the inspiration to pick up your instrument /practice everyday?

What drives me is my desire to communicate with people through music and connect to other humans on an emotional level, where we can feel each others pain, share joy, share experiences, and help each other through them. It’s an unspoken relationship, that is sung through melodies and lyrics; it’s an exchange of uncanonized energy. This combined with my sheer passion for creating art, performing, and experiencing this therapeutic release, mounted with the pure fact that I want to make my family and friends really proud of me because they believe in me so much are what drives me as well. I have a lot to be thankful for.
