Music publishing is to own and exploit copyrights however the publisher doesn’t sell anything directly to public, they license the rights for others to use the songs and compositions and bring them to the marketplace. This class explores how music is licensed in the entertainment industry. Topics include public performance licenses, mechanical licenses for both physical and digital formats, synchronization licenses, print licenses. The class will focus on industry “lingo"" and main deal points for each license. Hands on exercises include filling out cue-sheets.

- Differentiate a direct license from a blanket license or a per program license.
- Explain the Consent Decree.
- Explain what a compulsory license is.
- Articulate what “Most Favored Nation” is.
- Identify the special needs of a video game license.
- Calculate print royalties.
- Articulate the deal points of a broad sync license, sample license, print license.
