Music publishing is the business of copyrighted songs. This course serves as an introduction. Topics include copyright basics, publishing deals and the royalty pie, the various licenses and collective management organizations (CMO) that assist publishers in collecting the royalties. Hands on exercises include PRO researches, copyright and MLC registrations.

- Recognize the various rights music publishers have.
- Articulate the difference between writers share and publishers share.
- Distinguish the difference between the various publishing deals (single song, co-publishing, administration, work made for hire).
- Identify the various licenses granted by the publishers and how royalties are collected.
- List the various CMOs.
- Register songs with the MLC and copyright office.

Copyright in Music protects the creator’s rights over their songs and recordings, giving them control over copying, performing, and distributing their work. It covers both the composition (music and lyrics) and the recording, and unauthorized use can lead to legal consequences.
