As an emerging artist, one of the most important tools you’ll need in your music career is a professional Electronic Press Kit (EPK). Whether you’re pitching to venues, festivals, labels, or media outlets, your EPK serves as your musical resume and first impression. At Musicians Institute, our Artist & Career Services team works closely with students to develop these essential career tools, ensuring you’re ready to compete in today’s music industry. Here’s everything you need to know about how to build your first EPK that opens doors.
What Is an EPK?
An Electronic Press Kit is a digital package that contains all the essential information about you as an artist. Think of it as a one-stop shop for anyone who needs to know who you are, what you sound like, and why they should work with you.
Unlike traditional paper press kits, EPKs are easy to update, share via link, and accessible from anywhere. The Musicians Institute Artist & Career Services team helps students create polished, professional EPKs that showcase their unique talents and make lasting impressions on industry professionals.
Essential Components of Your First EPK
Professional Bio
Blog Post
"*" indicates required fields
By submitting this form, I authorize Musicians Institute (MI) to make or allow the placement of calls, emails, and texts to me at the phone number that I have provided, including through the use of automated technology, or a prerecorded or artificial voice. I understand that I am not required to provide my phone number as a condition of purchasing any property, goods, or services. I agree to the terms of MI’s Privacy Policy. MI will not sell or rent your information to third parties, and you may unsubscribe at any time.
Start with a compelling artist biography in two lengths: a short version (50-100 words) and a longer version (150-250 words). Your bio should tell your story, highlight significant achievements, and describe your sound without using generic terms. Write in third person and focus on what makes you unique as an artist.
Not sure how to write about yourself? The Artist & Career Services team provides personalized guidance on crafting bios that capture your artistic identity and resonate with industry professionals.
High-Quality Photos
Include 3-5 professional, high-resolution images that showcase your brand and personality. At minimum, you need a professional headshot and a full-body performance shot. Make sure these photos are available for download in both web-optimized and print-ready formats.
Consistency in your visual aesthetic matters, and these images should align with your overall brand. MI students have access to resources and guidance on building a cohesive visual identity that strengthens their professional presence.
Music Samples
Feature your 3-5 best tracks that represent your current sound. Include streaming links and downloadable MP3s. If you have a standout single or recent release, make sure it’s prominently featured.
Remember, music industry professionals are busy and they’ll likely only listen to 30-60 seconds, so put your best foot forward immediately! Our Artist & Career Services team helps you strategically select which tracks to showcase based on your career goals and target opportunities.
Videos
Add 2-3 video links, including live performance footage and official music videos if available. Video content helps bookers and promoters visualize you on their stage and gives media outlets shareable content.
Even a well-shot live performance from your phone can work if it captures your energy and musicianship. As an MI student, you have plenty of opportunities to film performances
Press and Achievements
List any notable press coverage, reviews, radio play, awards, or milestones. If you’re just starting out and don’t have much press yet, include impressive stats like streaming numbers, social media following, or sold-out local shows. Quantifiable achievements add credibility. The Musicians Institute Artist & Career Services team helps students identify and articulate their accomplishments effectively, even early in their careers.
Contact Information
Make it easy for people to reach you. Include your email, phone number, and links to your social media and streaming platforms. If you have management or a booking agent, include their contact details as well.
Where to Host Your EPK
Several platforms make creating EPKs simple and professional. Sonicbids, ReverbNation, and Bandzoogle offer EPK-specific templates. Alternatively, you can create a dedicated page on your artist website or use a simple Google Drive folder with organized materials.
Whatever platform you choose, ensure the link is short, memorable, and easy to share. Musicians Institute’s Artist & Career Services team provides guidance on selecting the right platform for your specific needs and helps ensure your EPK is optimized for the opportunities you’re pursuing.
Beyond the EPK: Building Your Complete Career Toolkit
While your EPK is essential, it’s just one component of a comprehensive career strategy. At Musicians Institute, our Artist & Career Services team takes a holistic approach to career development. We work with students to:
- Build professional resumes tailored to music industry positions
- Develop booking strategies and connect with venues and promoters
- Secure performance opportunities through our extensive industry network
- Navigate contract negotiations and professional agreements
- Create career roadmaps aligned with your unique goals
- Access industry connections through our alumni network and partnerships
Our team understands that every artist’s journey is different, which is why we provide personalized support that evolves with your career. From your first local gig to national touring opportunities, they’re here to guide you every step of the way.
Keeping Your EPK Current
Your EPK is a living document. Update it regularly with new music, recent press, updated photos, and current achievements. An outdated EPK signals that you’re not active or serious about your career. Set a reminder to review and refresh your EPK every three months or whenever you have significant news to add. Musicians Institute students learn strategic career management practices that include maintaining current promotional materials and leveraging new opportunities as they arise.

Building your first EPK might feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. At Musicians Institute, we’re committed to providing the tools, resources, and personalized support you need to succeed in the music industry.
