We’re heartbroken to share the news of the passing of Debra Byrd, a beloved member of the Musicians Institute community for many years. Byrd, as she was affectionally known as, served as an inspiration and pillar for MI students and musicians in the industry alike.
Along with mentoring and serving as MI’s Vocal Department chair for many years, Byrd was a longtime backup vocalist for Barry Manilow and artist in her own right. She was a member of his backing group, The Lady Flash, and remained dear friends with Manilow. He shared of her passing on his X account:
This is one of the saddest days of my life. I just can’t wrap my mind around the fact that Debra is no longer with me.
She was one of the most wonderful friends I’ve ever had.

She’s also known for her time as a vocal coach on American Idol, in which she trained and coached contestants for the first 10 seasons. Perhaps one of her most successful students was Jennifer Hudson, who also posted a tribute on her passing:

Some of her other incredible accolades in the music Industry included working with Bob Dylan during his Hard to Handle tour with Tom Petty in 1986, and appearing as herself on the soundtracks to films including The Lion King and Sister Act II.
Byrd undoubtedly left a massive mark on students at Musicians Institute, who have shared dozens on stories of her patience, guidance, talent and kind heart during their studies. Her spirit touched countless lives and the music world is a bit darker without her.
