Below is a statement from the Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Musicians Institute (DEIMI):
Musicians Institute would like to acknowledge and celebrate the history and accomplishments of the Black community in the United States and in the music industry during this Black History Month. We pride ourselves in celebrating the accomplishments of all people throughout the year, but recognize that, due to marginalization and disenfranchisement from time immemorial, it is important to highlight the accomplishments of Black people, past and present, during this dedicated time.
We also mourn with the communities of Tyre Nichols, Keenan Anderson, and all who have lost lives to police violence and echo the calls for justice and reform to permanently end these senseless deaths. We honor the activists, artists, and musicians, especially those who have been forgotten, who have contributed to the betterment of our society, and celebrate those who continue to make history everyday.
The best way to celebrate Black History Month is to continue to support Black-owned businesses throughout the year. To assist in this celebration, the Committee on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion at Musicians Institute (DEIMI) has compiled a list of Black-owned businesses and organizations to support in Los Angeles, as well as online. Additionally, we have put together playlists and lists of local Black artists and their events around the city during this month. We have also listed professional organizations that specifically support Black musicians, artists, sound engineers, and those in business so that students can find community and a network in the industry.

The Musicians Institute Library is also happy to display books in our collection that highlight the historical contributions of Black people throughout the industry and history, both in our physical library as well as in our eBook Collection. Finally, we have put together a list of grants intended to support Black students and artists so that they can get financial support. To see these lists, please visit our Resources Guide on the Library website.
If you have any contributions you would like to add to these lists, please contact us at [email protected] or contact our chair at [email protected]. Thank you and Happy Black History Month! We hope you continue to celebrate the accomplishments of Black people throughout the year.
