GARY WICKS

An in-demand upright and electric bassist in Los Angeles, Gary is very active both locally and internationally providing the low notes for many artists. He is currently the bassist for Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe nominated star of stage and screen, Matthew Morrison. In 2014 he wrapped up an almost six-year stint as the bassist for the GRAMMY award-winning vocal group The Manhattan Transfer.

Gary has been featured at many notable international music festivals around the globe, including Java Jazz in Jakarta; The North Sea in The Hague; Umbria Jazz Festival in Italy and the Montreal Jazz Festival to name a few. During his busy touring schedule with TMT, Gary earned a MM in Jazz studies at USC. Originally from Albany, NY, this second generation bassist has been a part of the vibrant music scenes of Los Angeles, CA; London, UK; Albany, NY; and Boston, MA where he earned a BM in Double Bass Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music.

Gary’s extensive knowledge and experience in many varied genres and settings has led him from stage to studios to record for such artists as Quincy Jones and The Manhattan Transfer. He has recorded in major studios such as Capitol Records and The Village Recorder in LA and Maida Vale in London.

While having a handful of different musical projects that feature his composing and arranging, Gary’s most current project is the original jazz quartet called Sophisticated Lady that has released two recordings; Sophisticated Lady and Simpler Times; on the audiophile label Yarlung Records.

As an educator, Gary is the bass instructor at Fullerton College; the bass instructor for the Contemporary Music Program at Saddleback College and is an upright bass and electric bass instructor at the Musician’s Institute. He has also been on faculty at the Silver Lake Conservatory of Music as their principal bass instructor.
