Musicians Institute’s Drum programs have been the launching pad for drummers in all walks of the music industry, and we pride ourselves in our immersive curriculum with instructors who are experts in their instrument.

At the MI Drum Workshop Weekend, students will take part in 16 hours of drum/percussion instruction with world-class faculty over two days. Students will learn community, leadership, and discipline through art, and have a whole lot of fun doing it.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 28TH

Hand Technique w Albe Bonacci

This workshop presents introductory to intermediate hand technique designed for the drum set player. Chop building exercises are presented through rudimental exercises and etudes.

Drum Set Technique w Jeff Bowders

Topics included in this workshop are techniques such as intricate hand development, endurance, speed and dexterity building for the drum set player. Creative elements such as linear drumming and soloing concepts are also presented.

Ensemble Performance w Brendan Buckley

Alongside accompanying guitar and bass pros, this workshop presents instruction on how to play the correct role amid different musical situations and styes. Drum instructors provide performance tips from communication, leadership, musicality, sound, groove and chart reading.

Timekeeping w Fred Dinkins

Designed to help drummers become better timekeepers, this workshop presents independence drills and beat placement such as “behind the beat”, “on top” and “in the middle”. Students will also be taught how to correct problems when playing drum fills by using play along material provided by the instructor. Students will be taught how to play figures with drum set-ups and while keeping solid time.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 29TH

Studio Sessions w Fred Dinkins

This workshop mimics the “real world” scenario of drum tracking in a modern-day professional recording studio. Topics include: developing drum parts, sight-reading charts, performing with backing tracks, overdubbing and punching in, and learning to lock in with loops and backing tracks. Studio etiquette and sound development are also presented in detail. NOTE: Participants will be split into two groups for the two sessions.

ALBE BONACCI

Albe Bonacci is a session drummer, author/educator and clinician. Albe is an MI alumnus as well as a graduate from the Drummers Collective in New York City, Albe has recorded with some of the best songwriters in the country including Diane Warren and Desmond Child. He has also authored articles in both Modern Drummer and Percussive Notes magazine.

Albe is a DW clinician and has held clinics for Musician’s Friend Music Stores, the Nashville Percussion Institute, the Pacific Crest Drum Corps and the Hollywood Custom and Vintage Drum show. As a full-time working drummer, much of his discussion contains business tips and advice on how to “make it” as a working musician.

Albe was named faculty member of the year by his students in 2016 and 2017.

JEFF BOWDERS

Jeff Bowders is a touring, recording and educating drummer in Los Angeles. Most notably recognized as playing drums for some of the greatest guitarist of our time such as Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, Joe Satriani, Larry Mitchell, Kim SeHwang, Richie Kotzen, Justin Derrico, Mike Keneally and Michelangelo. When not corralling all the notes from guitar wizards he has also performed/recorded with such artist as Puddle of Mudd, Shakira, Stu Hamm, Nelson and Graham Bonnet.

Education has always been an essential part of Jeff’s drumming life. As an instructor at Musicians Institute since 2003, Jeff has released a series of highly regarded educational material by Hal Leonard Publishing including: ‘Essential Rock Drumming Concepts-An Encyclopedia of Progressive Rhythmic Techniques” Book/CD, “Essential Drumset Fills-The Component Fill System” Book/CD, “Double Bass Drumming-The Mirrored Grooves System” Book/CD and “Jeff Bowders-Double Bass Drumming Workshop” DVD.

Jeff is endorsed by: Tama drums, Sabian cymbals, Vater drumsticks, Evans drumheads and Humes and Berg drum cases.

BRENDAN BUCKLEY

Brendan Buckley has been the drummer for international pop star Shakira for over 20 years.

In 2007, Buckley joined the Irish folk-rock artist Damien Rice for his “9 Crimes” world tour. This was followed by tours with broadway star Idina Menzel, former La Ley frontman Beto Cuevas, and the songsmith Daniel Powter. During these years, he also had the opportunity to work with Ozomatli, Gary Jules, Peter Himmelman, Susie Suh, Wyclef Jean, Gustavo Cerati, Alejandro Sanz, Kristin Mooney, Rami Jaffee, Richard Page, Laura Jansen, Peter Bradley Adams, Michael Mangia, Devil Doll, Shira Myrow, Jimena Angel, Kelly Sweet, Cherie, Brie Larson, Jennifer Peña, Kudai, G6, Sarah Packiam, and Daniela Spalla.

In September 2011, Buckley began touring with American-Taiwanese pop singer Leehom Wang for his Music Man world tour.

In July 2013, Buckley started playing for Singaporean singer JJ Lin. Recently, he has performed and recorded with the country artist Shelby Lynne, as well as Miley Cyrus, Emmanuel, JJ Lin, Melissa Ethridge, The Bodeans, Joseph Arthur, Debi Nova, Claudia Brant, David Bisbal, Jacob & Fanny. He has also worked with the king of Brazilian music, Roberto Carlos.

As of May 2016, he is on tour with Tegan and Sara promoting their new record Love You to Death.

FRED DINKINS

One of MI’s most popular instructors, Fred Dinkins has performed with the likes of Tramaine Hawkins, Andre Crouch, David Peaston, Wilton Felder, Ndugu Chancellor, Norman Brown and many others. Fred is also busy with numerous club dates, clinics and session work in the L.A. area and touring as musical director with the R&B vocal group the Emotions.

At MI, Fred teaches How to Practice, Timekeeping and Private Lessons.

JASON HARNELL

Jason Harnell is a world-renowned jazz drummer/educator whose unique style and individuality make him one of the most important jazz drum innovators on the West Coast. Over his extensive career, Jason has performed, recorded and toured with many of the world’s top jazz artists including Larry Goldings, Bob Sheppard & Maynard Ferguson.

Jason is known for his unmistakable sound and style, as well as his uncanny ability to connect with his students. He has endorsements from Yamaha Drums, Istanbul Cymbals, Aquarian Drumheads and Vic Firth Sticks.

Jason has been on the faculty at MI for over ten years and also teaches at UC Irvine.
