Musicians Institute’s Drum programs have been the launching pad for drummers in all walks of the music industry, and we pride ourselves in our immersive curriculum with instructors who are experts in their instrument.

At the MI Drum Workshop Weekend, students will take part in 16 hours of drum/percussion instruction with world-class faculty over two days. Students will learn community, leadership, and discipline through art, and have a whole lot of fun doing it.

SATURDAY JUNE 8TH

Hand Technique w Albe Bonacci

This course presents introductory to intermediate hand technique designed for the drum set player. Chop building exercises are presented through rudimental exercises and etudes.

Drum Set Technique w Jeff Bowders

Topics included in this course are techniques such as intricate hand development, endurance, speed and dexterity building for the drum set player. Creative elements such as linear drumming and soloing concepts are also presented.

Drum Set Performance Techniques w Ryan Brown

Alongside accompanying guitar and bass pros you will receive instruction on how to play the correct role amid different musical situations and styes. Drum instructors provide performance tips from communication, leadership, musicality, sound, groove and chart reading.

Jason Harnell Solo Drum Experience

ALBE BONACCI

Albe Bonacci is a session drummer, author/educator and clinician. Albe is an MI alumnus as well as a graduate from the Drummers Collective in New York City, Albe has recorded with some of the best songwriters in the country including Diane Warren and Desmond Child. He has also authored articles in both Modern Drummer and Percussive Notes magazine.

Albe is a DW clinician and has held clinics for Musician’s Friend Music Stores, the Nashville Percussion Institute, the Pacific Crest Drum Corps and the Hollywood Custom and Vintage Drum show. As a full-time working drummer, much of his discussion contains business tips and advice on how to “make it” as a working musician.

Albe was named faculty member of the year by his students in 2016 and 2017.

JEFF BOWDERS

Jeff Bowders is a touring, recording and educating drummer in Los Angeles. Most notably recognized as playing drums for some of the greatest guitarist of our time such as Paul Gilbert, George Lynch, Joe Satriani, Larry Mitchell, Kim SeHwang, Richie Kotzen, Justin Derrico, Mike Keneally and Michelangelo. When not corralling all the notes from guitar wizards he has also performed/recorded with such artist as Puddle of Mudd, Shakira, Stu Hamm, Nelson and Graham Bonnet.

Education has always been an essential part of Jeff’s drumming life. As an instructor at Musicians Institute since 2003, Jeff has released a series of highly regarded educational material by Hal Leonard Publishing including: ‘Essential Rock Drumming Concepts-An Encyclopedia of Progressive Rhythmic Techniques” Book/CD, “Essential Drumset Fills-The Component Fill System” Book/CD, “Double Bass Drumming-The Mirrored Grooves System” Book/CD and “Jeff Bowders-Double Bass Drumming Workshop” DVD.

Jeff is endorsed by: Tama drums, Sabian cymbals, Vater drumsticks, Evans drumheads and Humes and Berg drum cases.

RYAN BROWN

Ryan Brown is a professional drummer and percussionist in Los Angeles, California. In addition to his gig as the drummer for Dweezil Zappa, he plays with Los Angeles-based bands The Young Royals, Black Belt Karate, SexTapes, AM/FM, The Fuxedos and Madras, and in the bands of artists Arrica Rose, Karem Malicki-Sanchez, Colin Armstrong, Josh Canova, Space Oddity and rapper J Naugh-T.

He has toured with Taiwanese pop star Chyi-Chin and L.A. bands OWL and Ultraviolet, performed on “Last Call with Carson Daly” with Ingrid Michaelson and played the Bern Jazz Festival in Switzerland with R&B artist Niki Haris. He has recorded tracks and albums with producers Marti Frederiksen, Mark Hudson, Mikal Reid, Russ Irwin, Rob Seals, Glen Laughlin, Rob Shrock, Brian Dobbs, Klaus Derendorf, Brian Paturalski, Billy Morrison, Larry Crane and David Weisberg, including the hit single “The Real Thing” from Bo Bice.

Ryan can also be heard on releases by Foreigner, Circus Diablo, Hannah Montana, Clay Aiken, Cassie Davis, Nick Lachey, Jesse McCartney, Heather Graham, Suzie McNeil (Rock Star INXS) and Stephanie McIntosh, as well as on the movie soundtracks for Ice Age: Continental Drift (Adam Schlesinger), Kung Fu Panda (Hans Zimmer and John Powell) and The Dark Knight (Hans Zimmer). He’s performed on recordings with Alex Lifeson, Earl Slick, Elliot Easton and Rudy Sarzo.

Ryan has also appeared as a sideline musician in numerous TV shows and movies, including Pirates of the Caribbean 3: At World’s End, Desperate Housewives, Jag and Samantha Who?. He plays all styles of music, including rock, R&B, jazz, ska, funk, blues, folk and country. He is on the drum faculty at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, Calif., and teaches private lessons as well. A native of Denver, Colorado, he has played drums and percussion since he was 11 years old. Ryan graduated from Indiana University with a degree in jazz studies and percussion.

JASON HARNELL

Jason Harnell is a world-renowned jazz drummer/educator whose unique style and individuality make him one of the most important jazz drum innovators on the West Coast. Over his extensive career, Jason has performed, recorded and toured with many of the world’s top jazz artists including Larry Goldings, Bob Sheppard & Maynard Ferguson.

Jason is known for his unmistakable sound and style, as well as his uncanny ability to connect with his students. He has endorsements from Yamaha Drums, Istanbul Cymbals, Aquarian Drumheads and Vic Firth Sticks.

Jason has been on the faculty at MI for over ten years and also teaches at UC Irvine.

GORDEN CAMPBELL

Gorden Campbell has worked with a wide variety of artist including, Earth, Wind & Fire, George Duke, Neyo, American Idol Tour, Daughtry, Phillip Phillips, Jessica Simpson, Mary J. Blige, Beyonce, Kelly Rowland, Whitney Houston, Gerald Albright, Eric Benet, Brandy, Rahsaan Patterson, Tyrese, Faith Evans, Lalah Hathaway & God’s Property to name a few…. He can also be heard on movie soundtracks such as: Dreamgirls, Be Cool, The Wiz & Semi-Pro.

Born in New Haven Conn., Gorden was raised in Newburgh, N.Y. where he began playing at the age of 5 at his grandfather’s church. From 4th grade thru college he took formal lessons with some great teachers including jazz great Grady Tate. Performing in marching bands, jazz bands, orchestras, Gospel groups and even singing in chorus, Gorden was able to hone his skills in a variety of musical styles.

While keeping busy doing gigs and sessions, Gorden is also working as a producer producing music from R&B/Pop and gospel to hip hop.

KEVIN STEVENS

Los Angeles-based freelance Drummer Kevin Stevens is a graduate of the acclaimed University of Miami jazz department with a BA in Studio Music and Jazz Performance. Since moving to L.A. six years ago, Kevin has toured the globe with the likes of critically acclaimed Neon Neon, actress/singer Minnie Driver, and Chilean pop superstar Beto Cuevas (La Ley). In L.A., he has played with the house band (Cleto and the Cletones) for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” appeared on-screen in primetime TV shows, including “CSI: Las Vegas,” “The O.C.,” “Frasier” and “American Dreams,” and recorded numerous album and soundtrack dates.

Kevin is also the leader of the San Francisco-based Brass Monkey Brass Band, and on any given day he can be found putting his diverse skills to work playing indie-rock, jazz, funk, pop, R&B, deep soul, punk or big band.

At MI, Kevin teaches Private Lessons, Rhythm Section Workshop and Contemporary Drum Concepts.
