Musicians Institute presents Summer Shot, MI’s series of popular one-week programs in Performance, Recording, and Songwriting. Now in its sixth year, Summer Shot is your chance to experience MI's world-famous hands-on education while you take your creative and technical skills to a new level. Summer Shot Performance

If you sing or play guitar, bass, drums, or keyboards, Summer Shot Performance is for you.* Spend a week at MI’s world-famous Hollywood campus taking classes, lessons, and performing under the direction of MI instructors. There’s no better way to kick off the summer!

Six hours of intensive instrument-specific classes.

* Program details vary by instrument. You must be 14 or older to attend. There are no minimum skill requirements for admission, but beginners may find the program very fast-paced; some prior music study is recommended.

Summer Shot Recording

Whether you’ve already begun putting together a home studio or are wondering how to get started, Summer Shot Recording is the perfect place to take your knowledge and skills to a new level. In just one week, we’ll show you how to make great-sounding recordings at home using affordable equipment and software. Plus, we’ll take you inside world-class studios with professional engineers so you can learn directly from the best.

Classes
Six hours of hands-on recording instruction per day covering essential subjects like session set-up, loops and beats, file management, MIDI sequencing, recording and editing, basic production, and mixing and mastering. Working with Pro Tools© and Reason© software, learn how to create killer demos in your home studio.

Clinics
Daily clinics with some of the best engineers in the business show you how professionals handle recording, mixing and producing. Learn directly from award-winning pro’s who are at the top of their game.

Labs
Pro Tools© labs are open late into the evening - stick around and work on your projects, practice your skills, or have the lab instructor walk you through a tricky process.

Pro Sessions
Cap off a week of hands-on learning with a serious taste of the pro-level commercial recording environment in MI’s SSL 4000G+ Tracking Studio, NEVE Vx Mixing Suite, Pro Tools Production and Editing Suite, and THX-Certified Dubbing Stage. Observe and assist engineers, producers, and artists on real sessions. Listening Party After a week of pushing your recording knowledge and skills to a new level, debut your project for your fellow students and teachers at the final Listening Party.

You must be 14 or older to attend. There are no minimum skill requirements for admission, but students with no prior experience may find the program very fast-paced.

Summer Shot Songwriter

Summer Shot Songwriter is total-immersion educational experience in the art and craft of songwriting. In just five days, MI’s faculty of successful songwriter/performers will show you how to take your songwriting ability to a new level, how to earn income from your songs, and how to take your music to the live stage.

At Summer Shot Songwriter, your program includes highly informative classes, hands-on workshops, private and small-group lessons, and special industry panels. The week culminates in a concert on MI’s main stage where you perform your original music with a professional band before a live audience and the cameras.

The Art and Craft of Songwriting

Theory for Songwriters
learn the concepts behind harmony, melody, rhythm, form, and much more.

Melody Writing
develop techniques for creating strong, memorable melodies.

Lyric Writing
how to tell a story in song form, create a hook, develop verbal imagery and more.

Rhythm and Groove
learn how to use rhythmic beats and styles to enhance your message.

Creativity Workshop
techniques for kick-starting your creative juices.

Songwriter's Circle
perform your songs, hear constructive critiques, and carry out writing assignments designed to raise your skills.

Private Lesson
take a one-on-one songwriting lesson from an experienced writer.

Open Counseling
instructors listen to your songs, coach you on your instrument, and offer professional perspectives and advice in intimate small-group sessions.

The Business of Songwriting

How to Sell Your Songs
learn how to earn income from publishing and licensing, how copyrights and PROs work, and much more.

Panel Discussions
music publishing professionals discuss various aspects of the music business, listen to songs written by participants and provide expert critique and advice.

Songwriters’ Performance

Open Mic
perform in the evenings in MI’s intimate Passage Performance Space for your fellow students and instructors and get reactions to your songs and delivery.

Rehearsal
develop your arranging and performing skills as you rehearse for your final performance with a professional backup band.

In Concert
perform your best material in MI’s 500-seat concert hall for students, instructors, friends and family, accompanied by a pro band. Take home a DVD of your performance.

You must be 14 or older to attend. There are no minimum skill requirements for admission, but beginners may find the program very fast-paced; some prior writing and performing experience is recommended.
