Listening Party After a week of pushing your recording knowledge and skills to a new level, debut your project for your fellow students and teachers at the final Listening Party. Summer Shot Songwriter is total-immersion educational experience in the art and craft of songwriting. In just five days, MI’s faculty of successful songwriter/performers will show you how to take your songwriting ability to a new level, how to earn income from your songs, and how to take your music to the live stage. At Summer Shot Songwriter, your program includes highly informative classes, hands-on workshops, private and small-group lessons, and special industry panels. The week culminates in a concert on MI’s main stage where you perform your original music with a professional band before a live audience and the cameras. Here’s a brief summary of the Summer Shot Songwriter experience The Art and Craft of Songwriting Theory for Songwriters learn the concepts behind harmony, melody, rhythm, form, and much more. Melody Writing develop techniques for creating strong, memorable melodies. Lyric Writing how to tell a story in song form, create a hook, develop verbal imagery and more. Rhythm and Groove learn how to use rhythmic beats and styles to enhance your message. Creativity Workshop techniques for kick-starting your creative juices. Songwriter's Circle perform your songs, hear constructive critiques, and carry out writing assignments designed to raise your skills. Private Lesson take a one-on-one songwriting lesson from an experienced writer. Open Counseling instructors listen to your songs, coach you on your instrument, and offer professional perspectives and advice in intimate small-group sessions. The Business of Songwriting How to Sell Your Songs learn how to earn income from publishing and licensing, how copyrights and PROs work, and much more. Panel Discussions music publishing professionals discuss various aspects of the music business, listen to songs written by participants and provide expert critique and advice. Songwriters’ Performance Open Mic perform in the evenings in MI’s intimate Passage Performance Space for your fellow students and instructors and get reactions to your songs and delivery. Rehearsal develop your arranging and performing skills as you rehearse for your final performance with a professional backup band. In Concert perform your best material in MI’s 500-seat concert hall for students, instructors, friends and family, accompanied by a pro band. Take home a DVD of your performance. During this intensive six-day program, you’ll learn the fundamental skills of the guitar-making process by building your own custom instrument under the guidance of expert instructors. By the end of the program, you’ll not only know how it’s done, but you’ll take home a brand-new guitar (MI gig bag also provided). SS Guitar Builder is hands-on from start to finish, and MI’s state-of-the-art custom shop is your classroom. After you enroll, view the attached options (view the PDF file here) for body style, electronics and hardware and email program director John Carruthers ( johnc@mi.edu ), who will help you make your final selection. When you arrive, all of the components of your custom guitar will be waiting for you to cut, shape, assemble and finish using a combination of precision machine tools and hand-crafting techniques. Cut your body from the wood blank using super-accurate CNC technology and shape the final details by hand Design and cut the headstock Finish and detail the body and neck Wire and install pick-ups and electronics Install hardware Set up and fine-tune your guitar to pro specifications
