Tate Wittenberg to Direct Documentary on Legendary Tulsa, Oklahoma Ballroom

|    Aug 28, 2010

Tate Wittenberg (Film) has signed on to direct Raisin’ Cain: A History of Cain’s Ballroom, a feature-length documentary film on the legendary Tulsa, Oklahoma music venue.

Featuring both local and internationally famous musicians, the documentary will span Cain’s unique musical history from the 1930s depression era of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys into modern times with the likes of Sex Pistols, Bob Dylan and Wilco. The filmmaker’s have to date completed interviews with such notable performers as Elvis Costello, Wanda Jackson, Junior Brown, Red Dirt Rangers, Hot Club of Cowtown, and surviving members of the Texas Playboys, among others.

“Cain’s was the first place I ever heard live music. As a film-maker, I started to think about making a documentary that would celebrate and inform music lovers around the world about this extraordinary venue,” said Wittenberg.  “This project is a way for us to say thanks for everything Cain’s means to us and the music fans of Oklahoma and for attracting world renowned artists to Tulsa throughout the years.”

The film will be financed primarily through private charitable contributions, with funding administered through the Arts & Humanities Council of Tulsa.  Proceeds from the film will support arts and music education in the Tulsa area as well as the Cain's Ballroom Museum and Historical Society.
