Shaun Perez

Shaun Perez Working with Top Engineer Anthony Kilhoffer

|    Jun 24, 2009

Shaun Perez (Audio Engineering, Voice) has been working since March with noted engineer Anthony Kilhoffer (Kanye West, John Legend, Pussycat Dolls) while finishing up his band’s new CD release. Here’s Shaun’s story about his MI experience:

“Before attending MI, I worked out of a project studio that I put together in Carson CIty, NV. The desire to write music and record my own band generated an interested in audio engineering. After working with dozens of local bands, I thought I knew all there was to know about engineering.

“Musicians Institute exposed me to the infinite potential for knowledge of audio. Classes in Pro Tools, analog hardware, digital plug-ins, and the SSL and Neve consoles prepared me to work in a variety of studios. My mixing skills have also advanced immensely thanks to the mixing courses and acoustic ear training, and the new Post-Production Audio emphasis introduced me to working with audio in film and television.

“Also beneficial were the networking opportunities with both staff and students alike. With the help of the internship program, I interned at Mad Dog studios in Burbank and also gained hands-on experience doing location sound for student short films. I graduated from the Audio Engineering (Post-Production Audio) program in March 2009 with the award for Best Project and through a referral by an MI instructor, I obtained a position working for Anthony Kilhoffer, engineer for Kanye West, John Legend, and the Pussycat Dolls, to name a few.

“While working as an engineer, I am also currently continuing my education in MI’s Voice program to improve my skills as a musician. I am currently the guitarist and singer for the Los Angeles-based metal band Fear in Her Eyes, which includes bassist Willy Thornton (son of musician/actor Bllly Bob Thornton). The majority of the band's songs were tracked in MI's studios and all were mixed in my home studio. Our album is in the mastering process and is set for independent release in July 2009.”

“More and more of the auditions I’m having for recording artists are turning out to be MI class reunions. The graduates of MI have been dominating the new, young music scene in LA”.
