Jordan Ackerman: Audio Engineerto Reality TV Editor

Jordan Ackerman (Audio Engineering) is working steadily as a Lead Assistant Editor for television, with a resume that includes such shows as Big Brother 6, Chelsea Handler Show, Raising the Roofs, Pick Up Artist, Age of Love, Petfinder, Opportunity Knocks, Dice Undisputed, and Hell’s Kitchen 3 and 6. He recently checked in with this report on life since MI:

“I graduated from MI’s Audio Engineering program in March, 2006.  The program’s hands-on experience was invaluable to me, from learning all of the gear and signal flow of recording to workflow with producers and artists.  I also had two internships at recording studios where I worked first-hand with engineers and artists from small bands looking to make their first album to major hip-hop artists like Snoop Dogg and members of DPG.

“Shortly after graduating, I found work as a runner in reality television and eventually learned post-production using Avid Media Composer, which was an easy transition after my training on Pro Tools.  I work freelance and do mostly reality television, but I recently joined [professional engineering group] MPEG for a union game show.  

“I am now the Lead Assistant Editor for Hell's Kitchen 6 and I give much of the credit for my success to the time I spent in MI’s recording program.  I was amazed at how much of that knowledge translated into television post-production, from having a sound understanding of electronic equipment and computers to project organization and handling politics in an entertainment environment.  I also use my audio training on a daily basis, whether it be creating a good mix or understanding how to properly route digital and analog signals on various different editing setups.

“One thing I have from attending Musician's Institute is confidence.  My training gave me the confidence to put myself out there to meet new people and get jobs and the thick skin to make it through the hardest and longest of days.  As a result, I've been able to work with some amazing and talented people on some great projects (and on some cool studio lots) and I look forward to working as an editor for years to come.”
