GIT Instructors, Grads Rock NAMM Show

|    Jan 19, 2010

As music industry professionals and recording artists from all over the world met on the convention floor at the Winter NAMM Convention in Anaheim, California, they were treated to appearances by some of the great guitarists who teach in MI’s Guitar program, GIT. Here’s a sample:

World-renowned guitar hero PAUL GILBERT, a platinum-selling recording artist and GIT grad who still teaches at the school whenever his busy rock star schedule allows, signed autographs at the Ibanez Guitars booth. Paul is also offering his own series of “VIP Lessons” for anyone who’s interested (For info, visit www.paulgilbert.com.).

GIT’s resident rumba master, MARCELO BERESTOVOY, was found at the Guitarras Antonio Aparicio booth demoing classical and flamenco guitars from Valencia, Spain. “We played some music, but Antonio was very spontaneous, so nothing was set in stone,” said Marcelo. “Spaniards’ approach to this kind of thing is not scheduled. We opened some wine that Antonio brought from Spain, and then let it happen [laughs].”

Funk/fusion ace DEAN BROWN, fresh off a string of shows in Japan with Will Lee and Dennis Chambers, was at the Xotic Effects booth promoting their pedals and his new album. DAVE WEINER, Steve Vai’s “right-hand” man on the electric guitar, sitar, and other instruments, was also on hand.

JORG KOHRING was a featured artist at the Sonar/Cakewalk booth.

Edgar Winter lead guitarist DOUG RAPPOPORT was at ENGL. “I demoed their amps all four days, yo,” he stated.

GIT metal sensei KEN STEIGER was wielding new weapons for ESP. “I was demoing the new ESP H1001 LTD, twice a day, all four days of NAMM.”

TOM KOLB performed with recording artist Michelle Mangione at the Marriott Center Stage.

DAVE HILL took the convention floor’s Café Stage on Saturday with Steely Dan tribute band Pretzel Logic.

ALLEN HINDS performed every day on the new Bugera amps as well as Xotic pedals. He also played a concert for Behringer as well as a performing alongside titans of the four- and five-string at the Bass Bash.

Studio icon CARL VERHEYEN took the stage with former GIT instructor Steve Trovato at Deke Dickerson’s Guitar Geek concert Saturday night, followed on Sunday by a half-hour solo concert and autograph signing at the Alfred booth.

World-renowned fusion guitarist SCOTT HENDERSON performed at the Suhr Guitars booth, as well as playing a set at Muriel Anderson’s All-Star Guitar Night, backed by Stu Hamm and Dan Gottlieb. GIT’s jazz genius SID JACOBS also performed at the event, accompanied by MI veteran bass icon Jeff Berlin, as did GIT Director JUDE GOLD. Jude also performed a paint-peeling set of Van Halen songs in the Hilton Lobby on Saturday with tribute act Hot For Teacher.

“More and more of the auditions I’m having for recording artists are turning out to be MI class reunions. The graduates of MI have been dominating the new, young music scene in LA”.
