Alex Mesquita (GIT '97)

|    Jan 01, 2005

In 1996, Alex Mesquita traveled from his native state of Bahia in Brazil to study at GIT. With a background in classical guitar, Alex was looking to widen his horizons both geographically and musically. During his time at MI, was exposed to the pro music scene in LA, hearing, meeting, and playing with some of the top musicians in the world both inside and outside class. “My experience at MI was fascinating and it has stayed with me until this day”, Alex recalls. “I was in a strong musical environment, surrounded by great players that pushed me every day to the next level. It really catalyzed my musical growth. The tools and the background that I received at MI got me ready for musical life.”

After graduation, Alex returned to Brazil and started working as a sideman with famous Brazilian artists including Roberto Mendes, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, Daniela Mercury and Margareth Menezes among others. His solo career blossomed with live performances, recordings, and awards for “Best Song” and “Best Band”. In January of 2002, he entered the studio with producer Nestor Madrid to record his first solo album, Curva do Tempo, which was mixed in Italy by Francesco Sardella and has now been released (visit www.alexmesquita.com.br for clips and more information). Combining his experience as a composer, producer and performer of classical, jazz, blues, rock and Brazilian music, the CD shows off all aspects of Alex’s musical skills.

“More and more of the auditions I’m having for recording artists are turning out to be MI class reunions. The graduates of MI have been dominating the new, young music scene in LA”.
