On March 30th, 2003, MI played host to a celebration recognizing 45 years in the music business for guitar legend Phil Upchurch. Over four hundred well-wishers attended the event held in MI’s main auditorium, P-100. Opening remarks by noted Rev. Cecil L. Murray were followed with a special tribute to Phil delivered by South African Counsul-General, Dr. Glaudine Mtshali. During the warmly-received three-hour evening show, Phil treated the audience to a jazz tribute to the music of Curtis Mayfield as well as the debut of his new band, B.A.T.H. (AKA Betty and the Homewreckers). Surprise guests included Chaka Khan, Will Kennedy, Ray Parker Jr. and TaTa Vega. Phil's remarkable career stands in testimony to the power of talent combined with versatility and perserverance. Thanks for the inspiration, Phil!
