Monday, October 6, was the first day of the fall quarter, a fitting day for a stellar event on MI’s main stage as the Steve Vai Band put on a live final dress rehearsal for the upcoming G3 tour. The concert was co-sponsored by Carvin.
The annual G3 Tour, which this year includes Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmsteen, has become the number-one event in the world of guitar instrumental performance for reasons that were evident at Monday’s show. Steve’s band included former David Lee Roth bandmate Billy Sheehan on bass, guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine (who doubled on keyboards) and GIT grad Dave Weiner, also on guitar. P-100 was packed to capacity for the 90-minute show that featured multiple moments of outstanding virtuosity from Vai and every member of the band.
For MI students, the chance to see the band in a 500-seat venue rather than the usual arena-sized G3 setting was a real treat, and Steve and band stuck around afterwards for photos, autographs and interviews. The show was also videotaped for inclusion in MI’s in-house library of live performances (available for viewing only to MI students).
