Derek Trucks Band In Concert at MI!
Apr 24, 2004
On Thursday, April 22, MI is proud to present the Derek Trucks Band for a special concert / Q&A event in P-100, MI’s main auditorium.
Derek has earned a reputation as one of the most dynamic young guitarists in contemporary music, with a personal lineage that extends to the acknowledged master of blues/rock slide guitar, Duane Allman. As the nephew of the Allman Brothers’ drummer, Butch Trucks, Derek grew up with a backstage vantage point from which he could see, hear and learn from most of the major musical acts of the past several decades. By age 12, Derek was himself sharing the stage with such influential guitarists as Buddy Guy, and he quickly developed a reputation as a formidable stylist in his own right. Aside from Guy, Allman and slide godfather Elmore James, Trucks’ influences include musicians as diverse as John Coltrane and Sun Ra.
Derek's band, which has already been together for over ten years, follows the Allmans’ tradition of improvised, exploratory music, and since signing with Columbia/Sony Music Entertainment they have performed hundreds of live shows to well over a million people. Other members include Kofi Burbridge (keyboards, flute, vocals), Todd Smallie (bass, vocals), Yonrico Scott (drums, percussion, vocals) and Mike Mattison (lead vocals).
After the show, Derek and the band will engage in an informal question & answer session with MI students.
