Seymour Duncan Delivers Graduation Keynote Address
| Sep 28, 2010
On Friday, September 17, LA’s classic Wiltern Theater was filled with hundreds of MI students and their families as grads prepared to receive their diplomas and begin a new stage in their lives. Inaugurating the event was keynote speaker Seymour Duncan, an industry legend and founder of the renowned guitar pickup company that bears his name. “You have to become an individual -- keep your own sound,” Duncan advised the audience of future independent artists, engineers, producers and performers. “There is so much talent here [and you need to] meet as many musicians as you can. Listen to every guitar player, every bass player, every drummer … you will learn something from each one of them.” Duncan reinforced his words with his own actions, arriving early to listen to student performers from the front row and staying late to socialize with award winners and pose for pictures. His appearance at graduation followed a recent clinic at MI where he personally demonstrated pickup-winding techniques, answered questions about the industry, and even played some of his country and blues-inspired licks.
