MI Offers Free Music Business Seminars
| Feb 19, 2009
On Thursday, February 19 and Thursday, March 12 at 7:00pm, MI is offering free, open-to-the-public music business seminars at its Hollywood campus. Each seminar will be conducted by members of MI’s six-month Music Business Certificate program faculty.February 19: “Music Contracts: Don’t Get Screwed Again” What to sign and what not to sign? A panel of music industry attorneys (Dina LaPolt, Burgundy Morgan, Jeff Blue) will discuss contract issues, loopholes and what clauses new artists should avoid. A Q&A session will follow the panel discussion.
March 12: “Getting Gigs, Getting Paid, Getting Endorsements” Don’t be fooled by “pay to play” – find out where and how to get gigs that pay you, including getting into the college circuit and setting up your own tours. Panelists Chris Fletcher, Bobby Borg and Bernard Baur also discuss endorsements - find out who and when to call, what they offer, and what you need to do to get one.
MI’s Music Business instructors are all industry veterans with valuable perspectives on the changing music industry. Several were recently featured in a Los Angeles Times Calendar Section piece on the changing role of A&R in the new record industry. “[MI Music Business instructors} are hoping to equip a younger generation with the skills they'll need to succeed in a more demanding professional climate,” stated author Randy Lewis. “By adapting bedrock A&R principles to a new media landscape, they're mining rock history to shape the future." Seating is limited and reservations are recommended; call 1-800-255-7529 to RSVP. Both events will be held in MI’s main concert hall at 1655 N. McCadden Place, Hollywood CA 90028. Doors open at 6:30 and food will be served while it lasts.
