MI Bands Vie for Sony Music Japan Contracts
Jul 31, 2008

On Sunday, July 13, MI hosted auditions for Sony Music Japan’s “Grab Your Japanese Dream” project, through which Sony is locating talent for recording contracts and performing debuts in Japan. To qualify for MI sponsorship at the audition, current or former MI students had to make up at least half the membership of each band.

MI’s Director of Artist and Career Services Todd Berhorst, who organized the event and screened MI student and alumni talent, said, “All the bands performed as well as I have ever seen them play. MI could not have asked for tighter more lively sets and everyone played to the best of their ability, proving that the talent level at MI is very high indeed.” Vice President of Artist Development for Sony Music Japan George Asahi echoed this sentiment, saying “We had no idea that [MI’s] bands would be this good – no idea at all how wonderfully everyone would play. We are very impressed with the level of talent at MI.” Sony will announce the results in the near future.

MI bands included:
Zee: R&B/neo-soul with arguably the most talented collection of musicians on campus
Stella Vicarious: alternative metal; the band auditioned during a break in their current tour
Mission: Black: recent MI finalists for the Battle for the Warped Tour perform ‘hybrid metal’ influenced by the likes of Dream Theater, Pantera, Metallica, and Killswitch Engag
Breezy Lovejoy: soulful jazz with a very entertaining blend of sophisticated but accessible jazz grooves, exotic rhythms and a Michael McDonald-like vocal approach
Bruno Santos: acoustic-based singer/songwriter
The Lure: female-fronted dual lead guitar in-your-face metal
Jamie Meyer: solo acoustic pop
Devlin Murphy: piano-based singer/songwriter.
Structural Damage:  raucous ‘ol’ skool’ punk combining humor and agression
Off the Island: funky pop/jazz featuring the angelic voice of highly gifted MI student Laura Vall Arnau
Soul Seduction: all-female five-piece band rooted in classic funk and R&B evoking Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye
