GIT Events for Summer '03

|    Jul 28, 2003

Summer may be a time for some to lay back, but not GIT. Like all MI programs, GIT is in session year ‘round, and despite the lure of Southern California beaches, during summer the activity level remains high. Here are a few of the things that are going on at GIT through September: John Stowell Open Counseling On Thursday August 21st from 1-5pm, internationally respected master jazz guitarist, recording artist and highly acclaimed clinician John Stowell will be at GIT for an afternoon Open Counseling session exploring his unique improvisational and harmonic artistry. Ross Bolton Returns! Popular GIT instructor Ross Bolton is taking a short break during his busy summer touring schedule with jazz/funk vocalist Al Jarreau to show GIT students some very funky groove concepts. On Wednesday, July 30 from 12-4PM, Ross will visit GIT to conduct a special open counseling session before hitting the road again to finish a six-month tour. Starting this fall, Ross will be back on the regular GIT staff teaching his specialties, funk rhythm guitar and contemporary jazz/fusion improv (see Ross' bio under Faculty Profiles for more info...) Experience GIT Saturday August 30th 3-4:30 PM in the MI Performance Center is the time and place for the next GIT Experience. This clinic, free and open to the public, is like getting a FREE CLASS from GIT. Bring your guitar and let three of GIT's top instructors, Bruce Buckingham, Dan Gilbert, and GIT director Beth Marlis, give you a taste of what today's GIT is all about as they show you cool licks, tips, and tricks that will help you get the most out of your playing. There will be free gear giveaways and much more. Contact gitexp@mi.edu to reserve your spot NOW! Night of the Living Guitar #6 Sept. 10th 6:30-9:30PM is the date for another special open-to-the-public GIT performance at the Knitting Factory’s Alterknit Lounge (7021 Hollywood Blvd.; tickets $5/MI, $7/public). Beth Marlis, GIT Department Head, calls it “A hot night of guitar from the next generation of guitar heroes!” This semi-annual event is the final performance project for September graduates of GIT’s Professional Certificate program. Hot guitar, cool hang… Other GIT news: GIT thanks Favored Nations Records for donating a dozen of their recent CD releases to the MI library. Titles include new work from such great players as Marty Friedman, Andy Timmons, Pierre Bensusan, Tommy Emmanuel, and more. Schecter Guitars is donating two guitars (one 7-string, one drop-tuned) to the MI library for student checkout beginning in August! Synth you asked for it…Room 218 (the GIT Project Lab) has been fully outfitted with 5 Roland MIDI converters for use with the guitar synths that can be checked out from the library.
