Open Counseling with Jazz Guitar Virtuoso Howard Alden

|    Aug 31, 2010

On Tuesday, August 31 from noon to 4pm in Room 252, GIT presents an afternoon of guitar counseling and career guidance with jazz genius and seven-string guitar specialist Howard Alden. “He may be the best of his generation,” Owen Cordle wrote of Alden in Jazz Times magazine.

GIT grad Alden has been a Concord Jazz Recordings artist since the ’80s, with several acclaimed solo albums in addition to appearances with everyone from Red Norvo and Woody Herman to Clark Terry, Dizzy Gillespie, and Benny Carter as well as Alden’s seven-string guitar mentor, George Van Eps.

Alden was acclaimed for his stunning Django Reinhardt-inspired guitar work on the soundtrack to Woody Allen’s film, Sweet and Lowdown. Star Sean Penn, whose on-screen guitar performances were personally coached by Alden, received an Academy Award nomination for his work.
