Musicians Institute’s annual summer program offers intensive one-week courses in Performance (Bass, Drums, Guitar, Keyboards, Vocals, Sax, Trombone and Trumpet), Songwriting, DJ/Music Production, Guitar Building and more. Now in its eighth year, Summer Shot is your chance to crank up your creative and technical skills with MI’s world-famous, hands-on education!

We are proud to announce the lineup of guest artists at this year’s Musicians Institute Summer Shot Program!
Guests include Ozzy Osbourne bassist Blasko, drummer and Youtube sensation Meytal Cohen, Mars Volta bassist Juan Alderete, guitarist Dave Martone, Rihanna keyboard player Kevin Hastings, War and PHILM bassist Pancho Tomaselli, Tosin Abasi, Javier Reyes and Matt Garstka of Animals As Leaders, Bruce Kulick of KISS, Fishbone’s Angelo Moore, MI alumni and Orgy drummer Bobby Amaro, producer/songwriter Deuce, Michael Keene and Wes Hauch of The Faceless, Mike Spreitzer, Jeff Kendrick and John Boecklin of DevilDriver, Bruce Springsteen trumpet player Mark Pender and DJ Sid Vicious . Summer Shot students will have the chance to take Master Classes with all the artists, learning their songs and techniques and taking part in jam sessions with them.
Do you sing or play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, sax, trombone or trumpet? Spend a week at MI’s world-famous Hollywood campus taking classes, lessons, and performing under the direction of MI instructors. There’s no better way to kick off the summer!
Here’s a brief summary of the Summer Shot Performance experience:
Technique Training
Six hours of intensive instrument-specific classes.
Private Lessons
Focus on your personal style and technique during two one-hour sessions with an expert MI instructor.
Professional Studio Recording
Record one song in a state-of-the-art studio at MI with a professional producer.
Record Label A&R Panel and Q&A
Ask questions about the music industry and have your skills critiqued by the people who work with some of the industry’s top artists.
Open Counseling & Special Seminars
Counsel with members of the music business such as artists, managers and producers or jam with world-class musicians in intimate free-form sessions. Select from a range of seminars on style, technique, songwriting and more.
Guest Artist Concert
Incredible performances by top talent on MI’s main stage.
Open Jams & Talent Show
Hang out in the evenings, rehearse and jam with friends! At the end of the week, present your best chops in a stress-free environment & hear feedback from a panel of industry judges.
Live Performance & Video
Rehearse with a band that matches your age, style and experience. At the end of the program you will perform on stage and on camera!
Professional Head Shot
All working musicians need a quality photo and bio for marketing purposes. Take home a digital head shot to combine with your promotional materials.
Program details vary by instrument. You must be at least 12 years of age to attend. There are no minimum skill requirements for admission, but beginners may find the program very fast-paced; some prior music study is recommended.

In just one week you’ll learn how to produce professional recordings inside world-class studios with top engineers; learn directly from the best!
Here’s a brief summary of the Summer Shot Recording experience:
Classes
Six hours of hands-on instruction each day covering session set-up, loops and beats, file management, MIDI sequencing, recording and editing, basic production and mixing & mastering. Learn how to create killer demos with Pro Tools© and Reason© software.
Clinics
Daily clinics allow you to learn directly from award-winning engineers at the top of their game.
Professional Sessions
Observe and assist engineers, producers and artists on real sessions in MI’s SSL Duality SE Tracking Studio, API Mixing Suite, Pro Tools Production and Editing Suite, and THX-Certified Dubbing Stage.
Labs
MI’s Pro Tools© labs are open late into the evening - stick around and work on your projects, practice your skills or let a lab instructor walk you through the process.
Listening Party
After a week of finely honing your recording knowledge and skills, debut your project for your fellow students and teachers at the final Listening Party.
You must be at least 12 years of age to attend. There are no minimum skill requirements for admission, but students with no prior experience may find the program very fast-paced.
The Summer Shot Songwriter Program is a total-immersion experience in the art and craft of songwriting. In just five days, MI’s faculty will show you how to take your songwriting ability to a new level and bring your music to the live stage. Expand your knowledge and unlock your creativity.
Here’s a brief summary of the Summer Shot Songwriter experience:
Classes
Songwriting is both an art and a craft. Attend hours of classes and workshops each day with expert songwriters on topics including Theory for Songwriters, Melody Writing, Lyric Writing, Voicings and Grooves, as well as Creativity Workshops and Songwriter’s Circle.
Private and Small-Group Instruction
Receive a one-hour private songwriting lesson with an experienced writer and access to small-group Open Counseling sessions for song critique, instrument coaching and professional advice.
Music Publishing Panel
Learn the business of songwriting - special panel discussions with music publishing professionals explain various aspects of the music business and provide expert advice and critique on your songwriting.
Music Supervising Panel
Hear from music supervisors and professional Film/TV composers about market demands and how to improve your opportunities. Attend listening panels on songwriting coaching, how to build and market your catalog, and “broadcast quality” recording critiques.
Final Performance & Video
Build confidence in front of fellow students and instructors at casual Open Mic sessions, develop your arranging and performing skills as you rehearse for your final performance with a professional backup band, and cap the week off by performing your best material in MI’s 500-seat concert hall for students, instructors, friends and family. You will receive a video of your final performance.
This program is perfect for those who want to produce for other artists as well as those who want to enhance their own artistry with solid production skills. Extensive music industry training is incorporated, teaching you to build your catalog, market your material, promote your projects, build credits and make money from your music using all platforms available.
Here’s a brief summary of the Summer Shot Independent Artist/Producer experience:
Classes
Group classes taught by working professional producers are designed to introduce new gear and techniques for producing the sounds you want to achieve. Individual instruction with your studio advisor will develop your personal style and level of ability.
Peer Production
Paired with a peer, instruction is focused on achieving an understanding of another’s artistic goal and vision, producing quality tracks to support their songs while utilizing cutting edge techniques to feature the artist in the most marketable way.
Studio Sessions
Learn the art and technique of producing live drum and vocal tracks in a top of the line MI recording studio.
You must be at least 12 years of age to attend. (Age) There are no minimum skill requirements for admission but a basic knowledge of Logic or Pro Tools is highly recommended for this program and some prior music study/songwriting experience will be helpful.
During this intensive five-day program you’ll learn the fundamental skills of the guitar-making process by building your own custom instrument under the guidance of expert instructors. By the end of the program, you’ll not only know how it’s done, but you’ll take home a brand-new guitar or bass.
SS Guitar Builder is hands-on from start to finish, and MI’s state-of-the-art custom shop is your classroom. Before you begin, select your body style, electronics and hardware from an on-line list of options. When you arrive, all of the components of your custom guitar will be waiting for you to cut, shape, assemble and finish using a combination of precision machine tools and hand-crafting techniques.
In just one week, you’ll learn how to:
- Cut the body using super-accurate CNC technology and shape the final details by hand
- Design and cut the headstock
- Finish and detail the body and neck
- Wire and install pick-ups and electronics
- Install hardware
- Set up and fine-tune your guitar to pro specifications
You must be at least 14 years of age to attend.
Cutting-edge courses in modern electronic music making and performance featuring
classes in digital music, Ableton Live, Logic Pro, turntablism, CDJ and Serato.
Here’s a brief summary of the Summer Shot DJ / Producer experience:
DJ-ing in Serato
This course provides an in-depth study of one of the most prevalent DJ Emulation software. One quarter will be devoted to the study of Serato Scratch Live including Playback control, Beat Matching, Absolute vs. Relative vs. internal modes, using Cue points, loops, FX, plugins using crates and playlists and recording.
Keyboard Sound Design Workshop
Students will have hands on experience with sound manipulation and sound design with an emphasis on synth bass, LFO’s, samplers and drum programming, using hardware.
Private lesson
Using the format of one-on-one Private Lessons, students will be encouraged to develop and hone the performance aspect of their Live set. Special attention will be placed on achieving convincing transitions, using filters, effects and creative EQing as well as making correct on the fly artistic decisions.
OCs and Special Seminars
History of the DJ Seminar, DIY Marketing Seminar
and
Business of DJ Seminar -Destined to protect the aspiring deejay’s interests, this course will cover DJ ryders, contracts and various business agreements and common situations. An overview of copyright law and the basics of publishing will also be discussed.)
Supervised DJ Lab Hours
Students can practice on all of the DJ gear with supervision of an instructor.
Beatmaking in Ableton
Learn to create, record and produce beats in Ableton using the techniques, concepts and equipment used by the pros. This course covers emulative vs. non-emulative programming, real-time and step programming, sampling and various rhythm production techniques used in R & B, Dance and Hip Hop.
Re-mixing
Turntablism Workshop
Students will learn how to beat-juggle, cut, cue and drop etc will be covered.on the fly.
DJ Spin-off/ “Club MI”
Friendly competition between DJs – throw your name in the hat and get your spin on! Show off your skills while your peers work the dance floor. Audience will select top DJ from the night and a prize will be offered for the winner.
