Peter Thorn Touring with Chris Cornell
Mar 03, 2008
Guitar
Peter Thorn (Guitar ’91) is enjoying a thriving career as a touring/recording guitarist and songwriter. Following gigs with Jewel and Courtney Love, in 2007 he toured the world with Chris Cornell; ’08 includes more dates with Chris as well as a Japanese tour with Daniel Powter. Here, Peter summarizes his musical and professional life since MI: “After graduating from MI in 1991 I went on to form a band called Surreal McCoys with a couple of friends. We eventually signed a record deal with Sony Japan and released an album over there in 1996. After that ended, I started auditioning for various touring gigs and went on the road with Adam Cohen (son of Leonard), a Dreamworks band called Blinker The Star and a few others.
“In 2001, I got my first "big" gig with Five For Fighting. They had just released the song "Superman" as a single and it was taking off right when I joined. We toured all over the U.S. and Canada and visited Australia as well. We performed on The Tonight Show, Larry King Live, David Letterman, etc. In 2002, I joined a band with some fellow Canadians called Forty Foot Echo; we wrote, recorded and released an album on Hollywood Records that yielded a top-ten hit in Canada, "Save Me." in 2003, I got the gig with Robi Draco Rosa. Mainly known as a songwriter and producer in the US, he's also an amazing recording artist. We toured the U.S., South America (played for 140,000 in Columbia at the Rock Al Parque festival) and Europe. I recorded with him as well – I'm on the Mad Love album and the Al Natural live DVD/CD. “In 2006, I met Courtney Love and started writing and recording demos with her. This led to an album (still unreleased) that was produced by Linda Perry. I've since become good friends with Linda and she's had me play on sessions for Alicia Keys, Daniel Powter, Ben Jelen, and many others. I also toured with Jewel in 2006. In 2007 I joined Chris Cornell's band and we've had a blast touring all over the world. We toured with Aerosmith in Europe and Linkin Park in Australia, visited Iceland and South America, and even played 200 miles north of the Arctic circle in Norway. We have a summer tour booked, and in March we are playing 2 dates in South Africa, so I'm looking forward to that. I'm also going to Japan in April with Daniel Powter.”
Peter endorses and uses Gibson guitars, Ernie Ball strings, Suhr amps and guitars, Divided By 13 amps and Komet amps. To learn more about Peter, check out his website.
