The Music Industry is constantly changing. Whether you’re an industry veteran, a start-up entrepreneur, or just someone trying to make a living as a musician, continuing your education in the music industry can give you a comparative advantage that makes all the difference. Musicians Institute Extension is currently offering online courses in music business to help you stay ahead of the curve. Additional courses in recording, independent artist development, and music video & film production will soon be offered online, or on-campus during the evening and weekends, allowing you to incorporate your education into your busy lifestyle.





Bobby Borg is the author of the highly endorsed Billboard publication The Musicians Handbook: A Practical Guide to Understanding the Music Business. A consultant to both artists and independent labels, Bobby is a regular contributor to various music business publications such as Music Connection, Modern Drummer, Berklee Today, and other media both in print and online. He has served as a panelist or guest speaker at Cal Poly Pomona, Chapman Law School, Berklee College of Music, Moscow University, at the South by Southwest Music & Media Conference and elsewhere. Bobby teaches in the Music Business program at UCLA Extension and is a faculty member in the Music Business and Independent Artist Programs at Musicians Institute.




1. How much do MI Extension Courses offered in Winter 2012 cost?
In Winter 2012, MI Extension will only offer online courses. The cost of an online class during the Winter 2012 quarter is $650.

2. Are MI Extension courses for credit? Can I get a degree or certificate at MI Extension?
Not at the moment. Currently, MI Extension courses are only offered for your continuing education

3. How do I register for MI Extension courses?
You can register for MI Extension courses by visiting mionline.mrooms.net and following the directions on the enrollment page. Questions should be directed to the MI Registrar at registrar@mi.edu.

4. When is the deadline for admission to the next MI Extension academic quarter?
The deadline for admission is by the end of Week 2 of the Winter Quarter – January 13.

5. When does the next academic quarter start? When does it end?
The next academic quarter begins on January 3rd. It ends on March 16.


6. How do I access my online class?
You can access your online class by visiting mionline.mrooms.net.

7. How do I drop an MI Extension Course?
To drop an MI Extension course, go to the course's Moodle site at mionline.mrooms.net and click its link on your Moodle main page. Go down to the "Administration"block, usually on the bottom left side of the course’s main page. Click the link that says "Remove me from [department code for the course]."You'll be asked "Are you sure you want to remove yourself from this course?" Click "Yes."

Remember, you cannot re-enroll unless the teacher does it themselves. The deadline to drop an MI Extension course is the end of Week 2 of the quarter. Questions should be directed to the MI Registrar at registrar@mi.edu.

8. What is the Withdrawal and Cancellation Policy? Am I eligible for a refund?
Students may withdrawal or cancel from an MI Extension course by dropping all classes or by emailing registrar@mi.edu. 100% of your class tuition will be refunded if you withdraw before midnight on Sunday of Week 2. No refunds will be issued after Week 2.

Cancellation requests must be received prior to the start of the quarter in order to be eligible for a full refund.

All refunds will be issued within 30 days from the date the Withdrawal or Cancellation request is received and will be returned via check or wire transfer.

9. Where is Musicians Institute’s campus?
Musicians Institute is located at 6752 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.

10. Who teaches MI Extension Courses?
MI Extension courses are taught by current Musicians Institute faculty. MI’s faculty is comprised of professional musicians, recording engineers and experienced veterans of the music business who bring a practical understanding of the music industry to their classes every day.

11. Are Musicians Institute facilities open to MI Extension students outside of class hours?
Not at this time. Access to Musicians Institute’s main campus facilities, practice rooms and studios is only available for students enrolled in an academic program on campus at Musician Institute.

12. Are MI Extension students eligible for Musicians Institute student services?
Not at this time. Eligibility for Musicians Institute student services is only available for students enrolled in an academic program at Musicians Institute.

13. Are MI Extension students eligible for Financial Aid?
No. MI Extension programs are not eligible for Financial Aid.

14. How do I request a transcript or Proof of Enrollment?
You can request a transcript or proof of enrollment for your classes at MI Extension by visiting the Musicians Institute Registrar’s office on campus, or by contacting them at registrar@mi.edu.




Music Publishing: Making Money With Your Music


Do you want to make money from your music, protect your valuable art, and know your publishing rights? This essential course teaches you the basics of music publishing including the major sources of income (mechanical royalties, performance royalties, synchronization fees, and print percentages); important entities like the Copyright Office, the Harry Fox Agency and performing rights organizations (ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC); how to start your own publishing company, as well as pitch your songs to music publishers and music supervisors for film, television, and video games. The instructor will guide you through weekly modules that integrate helpful reading assignments, individual projects, case studies, conference calls, and video interviews with industry guests. DIY Music Marketing: Creating a Plan Of Attack and Building a Buzz On A Limited Budget

Do you to want to be heard, be seen, and be signed? Do you want to give your career leverage by building a strong brand identity and media buzz? Do you want to successfully release and promote records on a limited budget? This class teaches the principles of music marketing and will guide you to set realistic goals and plan strategically to achieve them. Learn to brand your solo project or band, analyze product, price, and placement, understand how to utilize the Internet, strategize your gigs, publicize events, break down licensing, and more. The instructor will guide you through a step-by-step process to research and develop your own marketing plan of attack — complete with budget and timeline — to help you attract fans and potential financial investors. Music Business: Learning the Fundamentals and Growing Your Business

Play music, don’t let the music industry play you! Whether you’re a new artist just learning to build your business or an established industry veteran who wants a refresher course, this class has something for everyone. The course offers a basic look at the music business with insight into the following four major subjects: 1) Helpful tips to establish your career in music (networking, D.I.Y. strategies, and A&R); 2) Understanding of business relationships (band memberships, solo artists, self-employed and contracted employees); 3) Development of a professional team (managers, attorneys, producers, business managers, and talent agents); and 4) Understanding of sources of income (music publishing, record royalties/advances, music publishing, and merchandising). The instructor will introduce students to the basics of each subject with the use of reading assignments, discussion topics, video interviews with industry guests, conference calls, and more. This is a great course for anyone who wants to get a clear and quick survey of the music industry.
